Wine of the Week for week ending 4 February 2001

Selaks Drylands Winemakers Reserve Sauvignon Blanc 2000
Marlborough, New Zealand

Label of Selaks Drylands SB 2000

When people ask me which sauvignon to buy, this is one I say they should try.

I've convinced friends and acquaintances in New Zealand, Australia, the US and the UK to give it a go, as well as giving a bottle as the odd present here and there, so I thought I'd stand behind my advice and select this wine as the Wine of the Week before it sells out.

It is the Selaks Drylands Winemakers Reserve Sauvignon Blanc 2000, one of my favourite expressions of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc from the 2000 vintage

This pale coloured wine oozes so much sweet ripe passionfruit flavour that you can almost imagine the little purple-skinned fruit with its bright yellow pulp as though you were eating it. Only drinking this sauvignon blanc is better than eating a passionfruit because you don't get seeds stuck in your teeth.

There are many complimentary flavours such as a hint of pineapple and a suggestion of sweet orange plus a gooseberry pungency to remind you this is sauvignon, while zingy acidity like that of a freshly squeezed lemon perfectly balances the fruit sweetness.

Then there's a grassiness that, when I close my eyes, gives me the illusion of being in a meadow at the end of a hot dry summer.

A little glycerol adds to the weight and texture of this ripe and juicy wine while a suggestion of summer herbs emerges on the lingering, citrus-influenced finish.

Drylands Estate is a vineyard planted on Marlborough's alluvial soils that has been producing delicious sauvignon blanc for Selaks for the last few years. Winemaker Darryl Woolley says that the three months the wine spent on yeast lees has added complexity and increased palate weight. He is right!

This is simply a yummy sauvignon blanc and really has to be tried to be believed. For the best effect try this wine chilled on a searing hot summers day. It is so refreshing, I am sure you won't be disappointed.

I've seen it in both fine wine retailers as well as in the supermarket where the price just hovers under the $16 mark, which offers outstanding value for money.
