The Romeo Bragato Awards, held in conjunction with the annual grape and wine industry Romeo Bragato Conference, are unique as the only industry awards that recognise the quality of the grape and the contribution of the grape grower. Wines are entered by the grower, rather than by the wine company that produced the wine (unless they are the one and the same) and a minimum of 85% of the grape juice content of the wine must come from vineyards owned, operated or managed by the entrant.
667 wines were judged at the 2006 Bragato Wine Awards and a record 476 wines (71%) received a medal with 53 of those wines (8%) receiving gold, 141 receiving silver and 292 receiving bronze. Entries were up 20% from last year.
Chairman of Judges, Ivan Donaldson, said that the overall quality at this year’s competition was extremely high. "The 2006 vintage has been extremely good, and this is reflected in the Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling classes which are the ones from this year that we have had the chance of evaluating at this competition,” he said. Wines of the same varietal were seperated by vintage year for judging.
