Terra Sancta Central Otago Rose 2016 (sc) Gorgeous pink spinel gemstone hue. Spiced strawberry and Morello cherries fill the delicately fruity bouquet. Moderate palate weight with a slightly oily feel to the texture, a zing of pepper that complements the spiced strawberry fruit, and a juicy finish seems almost creamy. Served chilled it seems just on the cusp of off dry. 13.5% alc. $23.99. 7Sep2016.
Wooing Tree Central Otago 'Blondie' 2016 (sc) The bouquet hints of pear drops and strawberry water and while it initially smells a little like pinot gris it is actually made from 100% pinot noir without skin contact, hence the barely-there pink hue. Crisp and dry in the palate with hints of dry cherry, a suggestion of almond, a touch of spice and a bright zing of citrus as the wine lingers, itís actually quite complex as it evolves with every sip. 13.5% alc. $24.99. 10Aug2016.2015 Vintage [top] [index]
Akarua Rua Central Otago Pinot Noir Rose 2015 (sc) The crystalline blue-tinged deep pinky-red colour is like a pink tourmaline gemstone. Must be served ice cold. Gold Easter Show. 13% alc. $19.99. 24Feb2016.
Black Barn Hawkes Bay Rose 2015 (sc) The colour is the lightest of blush Ė barely pink if you like and the delicate bouquet reveals a hint of marzipan and a touch of cherry stone. Clearview Black Reef Blush 2015 Ė Hawkes Bay (sc) Made from Chambourcin grapes, this is a dark pink / almost ruby hue. In the mouth itís full-flavoured, savoury and spicy with juicy black Doris plums and blackberry fruit and a crisp dry finish thatís accents with tangelo, glace cherries and cake spices with a zing of ginger adding warmth and tang. Full and fleshy, and when chilled it is very juicy mouthfilling and quenching. NZIWS Gold Medal Tasting. 13.5% alc. 7Sep2015.

Beautifully fragrant nose with a delicate nuance of strawberries. Full, almost oily texture in the mouth with the fruit reminiscent of strawberries, raspberry and early season plums Ė itís crisp and refreshing with a lovely citrus tang and very appealing roundness to the finish. Thereís a lovely herbal / bramble bush nuance in there that was detected on the nose as well Ė summer herbs with a savoury citrussy tang. My sister says Ďjust gorgeousí. Fashionable and tasty - the colour light, not deep. On the outdoor table with the sun at a low angle, the refraction of the rays gives a rainbow effect.13% alc. $25.00. 19Dec2015.
Invivo Marlborough Sophieís Choice Rose 2015 (sc) First note: Strawberry on the nose and in the palate with a lovely bright sherbetty savoury allure. Te Awa Left Field Hawkes Bay Rose 2014 (sc) Very pretty luminous Rubellite pink with a violet tinge that is so attractive. The aroma is strawberry in the pan truing to jam with an herbaceous / wild strawberry twang - both Neil & Christine said caramel on the nose. Strawberry is the predominant fruit - strawberries with pepper and cream. Itís fresh, crisp and dry with an herbaceous edge but just enough juicy fruit to make it quite quaffable. Perfectly good nibbler with tomatoes and crackers. 13% alc. $17.99. 17Apr2015.
Te Mania Nelson Rose 2014 (sc) The colour is a deep watermelon hue. The aroma is strawberries nicely balanced by a touch of rosehip and herb and then in the mouth, while it initially seems a sweeter style, i.e. off dry to medium, the flavours are juicy and ripe with the strawberry / cherry lusciousness brought into check by a crisp red apple finish. Made from Pinot Noir it works very well with tomatoes, and surprisingly with chocolate raisins - they were in the fruit and nut mix. 14% alc. $19.99. 18Jan2015.
Terra Sancta Central Otago Pinot Noir Rosť 2014 (sc) Very pretty pink sapphire, almost ruby in hue. The fragrant red berry aroma has a touch of orange zest, a twist of herb and is a touch spicy too. 8 Ranges Central Otago Pinot Rosť 2013 (sc)This is an exciting dry-styled Rosť with a light watermelon pink colour, cherry and raspberry aromas and a tangy brightness to the refreshing flavour. Aronui Single Vineyard Nelson Pinot Rose Noir Rosť 2013 (sc) The fragrant bouquet offers up scents of red and blue berry aromas with a sight earthy nuance that's distinctly pinotesque. The wine is expansive and mouthfilling with a spicy tingle to the crushed strawberry flavours and vinous complexities, yet the finish is crisp and fresh with a hint of tangerine. A blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Malbec. 13.5% alc. $25.00. 17Dec2013.
Heron's Flight Matakana un bacio d'alba Dolcetto Rose 2013(sc) This has a pretty 'watermelon tourmaline' hue and there is an appealing floral nuance and vinous berry concentration to the scent but it is contrastingly savoury in the palate where the fruit reminds me of rhubarb, apple and lemon sherbet with a yin-yang sweet-sour contest going on. Made from 100% Dolcetto, a change from the everyday style of Rose, the finish is crisp, refreshing and dry with a light tannin grip. Try with a Mediterranean vegetable platter - include eggplant. 12% alc. $25.00. 17Dec2013.
Kim Crawford Hawkes Bay Pansy Rose 2013 (sc) Gem-like ruby. Cherry on the nose and crisp, fresh and juicy in the palate with strawberry fruit, a lovely balanced savouriness in behind and a touch of black pepper, finishing just off-dry. A blend of 63% Merlot, 37% Malbec. 13% alc. $18.00. 1/09/2013.
Mahurangi River Matakana 'Pretty in Pink' Merlot Rose 2013 (sc) Very evocative light ruby with a fluorescent blue-pink glow. Saint Clair Marlborough Vicars Choice Bright Light Sauvignon Blanc Rose 2013 (sc) You see a delicate pink wine that's like a pink beryl gemstone in hue, but the aromas are not the typical red berry profile - you smell something you donít expect - sauvignon blanc! And a slightly 'sweaty' one at that. Some Sauvs are described as having blackcurrant, and I never get it, but I do in this one, but perhaps because there's a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon in here too. Itís fresh, tangy and vibrant with a zing of lime, a whisper of mango, the bite of capsicum, a flash of pineapple sherbet and a soft lingering finish. Very refreshing. A cool summer drink! Two for the price of one. 9.5% alc. $19.50. 18Dec2013.

There's an inviting bouquet of cherry but the fruit-filled palate is more reminiscent of blackcurrant initially but there is pepper and strawberry on the finish. Tohu Nelson Single Vineyard Pinot Rose 2012 (sc) Youthful violet notes to the darker pink hue. The aroma is fruity, like fresh 'fruits of the forest' in jelly. Just off dry and quite light bodied (surprising because the colour makes you expect more), fruity and zesty with a subtle earthy undercurrent and perhaps even a touch of anise. Delivers in colour but fades away in the palate. Nice drinking, nevertheless. 13% alc. $21.95. 29Dec2012.
Waimea Nelson Pinot Rose 2012 (sc) Watermelon hue. Delicately fragrant with hints of apple. Wooing Tree Central Otago Blondie 2012 (sc) There's a slight pink tinge to the pale hue. Spiced nut nuances add richness to the otherwise neutral bouquet. Made from 100% Pinot Noir, in the mouth it initially displays Pinot Noir's earthy traits but very soon tropical fruit abounds - a tropical fruit salad with banana and strawberry added in. Fresh, light, tangy and bright, chilling enhances the freshness and it hits the spot on a hot summer's day. A good match to salmon. 14% alc. $25.00. 12Jan2013.

Wooing Tree Tickled Pinot Rosť 2012 (sc) Here we have a watermelon coloured medium sweet style of Rosť but it has excellent acid balance to the candied fruit sweetness. The bouquet reminds me of strawberry juice and macerated cherries and it is like iced watermelon injected with strawberry liqueur in the palate. Plus there is a little of Pinot Noir's earthiness in behind. Such an interesting wine style Ė and great with the summer berry salad with meringues and cream on Xmas Day. 10% alc. $38. 25Dec2013.
Yealands Marlborough Premium Selection Sauvignoir 2012 (sc) Deep cerise. The bouquet is juicy and inviting with rich berry scents of blackcurrants and blackberry. Rich in the palate, it even seems a little smoky, with cherry, plum, tobacco and a suggestion of tannin that imparts a dry finish where there is a hint of strawberry and chocolate too. Made from Sauvignon Blanc with Teinturier from Chile blended in to provide rose colour. Doesnít taste like Sauvignon Blanc however. What I would call a 'serious' rose, it really does beg for food. 13% alc. $18.95. 29Dec2012.2011 Vintage [top] [index]
Abbey Cellars Blushing Monk Hawkes Bay Rose 2011 (sc) Rubellite tourmaline coloured with an aroma that evokes memories of late summer, stopping to pick warm, juicy blackberries on the side of a dusty country road. Southbank Pink Sauvignon Blanc 2008 (sc) Delicate strawberry-water pink. This is made from Sauvignon Blanc and it sure smells like it. Quite full in the palate with an oily texture, it's quite sweet for SB, but then it is a Pink SB. It's like strawberry and capsicum, an odd combination, and then the citrussy notes that characterise many Marlborough SB's kick in. What does the 4% Syrah adds besides the colour, I don't really know. Finishes, crisp, fresh and dry. 12.5% alc. $18.95. 25Apr2009.
Tussock Nelson Pinot Noir Rose 2008 (sc) A light and delicate strawberry-ish, Pinot-ish aromas with a savoury nuance. Twin Totara Waimauku Rose 2008 (sc) This blend of Cab Franc and Merlot has a bright orange glow to the pinky colour. Perfumed and floral with rose hips - it smells juicy. Slightly sweet - but more just 'off dry' than medium, it has a lightly oily texture and spice with some citrussy zest and raspberry / unripe strawberry. A little tug of tannins gives this wine serious appeal - there's enough acidity to keep it bright and fresh. A juicy alternative to SB or Riesling.13% alc. $14.50. 20Jun2009.

Alexia Hawkes Bay Rose 2007 (sc) Doesn't seem to have the freshness of the others in the blind tasting. Savoury, earthy, a little medicinal. A strong wine, seems to be Merlot-based. Grainy textured and just a little lacking. Probably should have been drunk past summer. 13% alc. $19.95 3Jan2009.

Fromm La Strada Marlborough Rose 2007 (D) There's an amazing textural richness in this almost bone dry wine that has the prettiest pink, watermelon hue. It's sweetly perfumed, like a bowl of fresh strawberries sprinkled with icing sugar, and tastes like strawberries too - strawberries with a little bit of spice and a faint herbal nuance. A touch of viscosity adds richness to the mouthfeel and a touch of acidity on the finish adds a zesty brightness. It's perfectly poised, an absolutely delightful wine. 13% alc. $16.90. 3Nov2007.
Margrain Vineyard Martinborough Pinot Rosť 2007 (sc) There's a richness to the lustrous pink colour. Strawberry scents fill the nose while cherry and plum fruit flavours fill the palate - like fresh, early season, juicy yellow-fleshed that fall off the tree with some shaking. Morton Estate Musetta Rose 2007 Hawkes Bay (sc) A deep, rich pink. Red wine nose - a hint of leather. Quite floral, yet spice in the palate, perhaps reflecting the varietal make-up. Mystery Creek Waikato Syrah Rose 2007 (sc) Orange tint to the pinky-red hue. Smells like a light red wine - slightly earthy, savoury and gamey with perhaps the merest suggestion of chocolate-coated berries. However the excellent nose is followed by an anti-climax of flavours with unbalanced sweetness and a chocolate / confectionary / bandaid flavours. What it does have in its favour is structure and tannin. Mangatawhiri fruit. 9.5 g/l acidity. 14 g/l rs. 12% alc. 3Jan2009.
Richmond Plains Blanc de Noir 2007 (sc) The palest of pinks with a candy floss lightness, there's strawberry, cherry and rose petals on the nose and juicy to the taste with abundant strawberry and raspberry sweetness, a sherbet zestiness and a touch of creamy vinosity that adds richness and texture. Richmond Plains Nelson Monarch Rosť 2007 (sc) Clear, deep pink almost ruby. Delicately floral and sweet smelling, but surprisingly quite savoury to the taste - savoury and earthy with concentrated 'very ripe' cherry and red berries and a hint of grapefruit too. Made from organically grown Pinot Noir grapes, when tasted straight from the fridge I found the acidic edge just a little harsh. I liked it much better when it wasn't chilled to the bones. 14.5% alc. $19.90. 19Jan2008.
Schubert Wairarapa Rose 2007 (c) There are hints of orange to the pale pink hue, so it stands out not only for its 'real cork' closure but also for its lighter colour. A fuller bodied style of Rosť with a yeasty richness and a spritzy texture, it's bright, spicy and zesty with a touch of sweetness and underlying savouriness but just a little astringent when chilled to the bones. When it's lost the cold edge, it's well-balanced and refreshing and a little reminiscent of a Riesling, even though it's made from Pinot Noir grapes. 12% alc. $20. 19Jan2008.
Sileni Hawkes Bay Cabernet Franc Rosť 2007(sc) Deliciously appealing pink ruby colour, this medium-bodied style tastes deep and earthy and just a little leathery with blueberries seemingly the dominant fruit until summer berries take over the finish. 13.5% alc. $20. 4Sep2007.

Te Mania Nelson Pinot Noir Rosť 2007 (sc) Clear, deep pink. Reasonably rich berryish aroma for Rosť. A little sweet to the taste, without the crisp balancing acidity at first but herbal, savoury and spicy rather than fruity, with some graininess and grip to the texture and a zesty tingle left in the mouth after the wine is swallowed. Good straight from the fridge. A great summer refresher! 14% alc. $17.90. 19Jan2008.
Unison Hawkes Bay Rose 2007 (sc) A deep ruby red - shiny, gemmy and bright. Spicy on the nose and a little earthy and leathery in the palate - has this some Malbec in with the predominant Syrah? Full-bodied with a little bit of tannic grip, it has a mouthfilling vibrancy to the finish. I though this best with food. Try with hot smoked salmon on a horseradish-infused cream cheese spread.13% alc. 3Nov2007.
Vavasour Awatere Valley Rosť 2007 (sc) Made from 100% Cabernet Franc grapes, it's such a pretty clear, deep ruby pink and wins points on colour alone.
