[2009] [2008] [2007] [2006] [2005] [2004 and older] [index]

2010 Vintage [top] [index]

Esk Valley Hawkes Bay Rosé 2010 (sc) A blend of 94% Merlot and 6% Malbec, this is a lighter colour than it has been in the past. This salmon pink-hued wine is a lovely fruity Rosé with strawberries and cherries and a dry, savoury, earthy backbone, which makes it so appealing. This is definitely one for the Rosé purists. 14% alc. $24. 31Oct2010.

Rockburn 'Stolen Kiss' Central Otago Rosé 2010 (sc) A gorgeous watermelon pink-coloured wine that performs best with chilling. The bouquet is reminiscent of heady peach blossoms and glace cherries. Made from pinot noir it has the grape's natural savouriness with fruit reminiscent of strawberry and watermelon and a lovely long mouthcoating finish. It's a perfect sipper best served chilled to enjoy on a sunny afternoon or to accompany wood smoked salmon - either as an entrée or canapes. 14% alc. $20. 6Sep2010.

Ti Point Matakana Rosé 2010 (sc) Delightful dark watermelon hue. Aromas of strawberry and a sweet palate with a rich savoury undercurrent and the slightest touch of fruitcake spice. Starts off sweet but finishes quite savoury. A beautiful match to fresh new season strawberries and Camembert together. 13% alc. $21.90. 25Oct2010.

Tussock Nelson Pinot Noir Rose 2010 (sc) Pale watermelon pink. A hint of strawberry to the scent. More strawberry and raspberries and juicy, fresh, yellow-fleshed plums come forth in the taste. Just off dry with underlying earthy savouriness, it is light, fresh and frivolous and full of promise of summer. 12.5% alc. $14.99 17Nov2010.

Villa Maria East Coast Rosé 2010 (sc) Very pale salmon pink with delicate fruity aromas and light fruity flavours that finish with a zing of citrus and a touch of spice. A blend of mostly white grapes from Gisborne, Hawkes Bay and Marlborough with a splash of Malbec for colour, perhaps not for the Rosé purists but it will be appealing for the masses to drink. 13% alc. $20. 31Oct2010.

2009 Vintage [top] [index]

Amisfield Central Otago Saignee Rosé 2009 (sc) Vivid cerise in colour with a fluorescent glow. Served chilled it has body and texture and a bright fresh flavour with strawberry and cherry and some herbaceous notes slightly reminiscent of Sauvignon Blanc. But this is 100% Pinot Noir bled off from fermenting Pinot Noir juice. Best when chilled to the bone - when it warms up a little, it seems just a little too sweet. Ice bucket wine. 13.8% alc. $25. 28Sep2009.

Butterfish Bay Northland Paewhenua Rosé 2009 (sc) Vivid in colour and seemingly quite dry to the taste with a slightly savoury nuance to the wild red berry fruit, a suggestion of herb and a touch of zest to the finish. Served chilled for best results because once the chilled edge comes off, it as actually quite sweet and the finish is tart. Doesn't state the grape varieties it is made from.15/20. 28Sep2009.

Corazon Mangatawhiri Single Vineyard Syrah Rose 2009 (sc) This dry, medium-bodied Rosé has a lovely clear, deep pink colour. Strawberry, cherry, dried herbs and delicate peppery spices interweave into the earthy, savoury backbone of this wine that has a smooth, oily texture and brightness to the lingering finish. 13.2% alc. $18.00. 17Jul2010.

Gladstone Wairarapa Rose 2009 (sc) Salmon pink. Red berry aromas with a squeeze of mandarin. Juicy, lightly viscous, red berry fruits, a touch of zest a zing of spice. Very pleasing to the taste with a long full finish and finishes dry. A blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Malbec. 14.5% alc. $22. 13Dec2009.

Hawks Nest Matakana Cabernet Franc Rosé 2009 (sc) Salmon pink in colour, this dry styled Rosé has a pretty perfume and cool, fresh, crisp flavours of strawberry and raspberry with just a touch of savouriness, a suggestion of spiciness, subtle grip and a light viscosity. Serve chilled it is quite refreshing. 13% alc. $22. 1Nov2009.

Jules Taylor Rosé 2009 (sc) Ruby pink with a lustrous glow, this gorgeous fruity Rosé is fresh, crisp and tantalisingly dry with flavours of macerated strawberry, spiced cherry and cream. 100% merlot made from Gisborne fruit. 13% alc. $21.99. 9Sep2009.
Light ruby pink in colour with aromas of dried plums, brambles and spice, this seems quite dry. Fruit is in the strawberry and plum spectrum and a touch of liquorice hums through the silky backbone. Made from 100% Merlot, it's made to be chilled and tastes just delish straight from the fridge. 13% alc. $19.99. 6Jan2010.

Kina Beach Nelson Merlot Rosé 2009 (sc) Rich pinky red. Served chilled this initially seems like a sweeter wine with brightness to the cherry fruit, softness to the texture and the finish all strawberry and cream. But this was even better as the chilled edge wore off and the well balanced acidity came through. A good food style of Rosé - if you want to actually want to eat with this style of wine. 12.5% alc. $20. 28Sep2009.

Locharburn Central Otago Rosé 2009 (sc) A gorgeous light pink spinel gemstone colour. Aromas of bright red cherry fruit mingling with a pinot earthiness lead into a slightly viscous, full-bodied (for Rosé) spicy palate with a touch of pink bubble gum coming through and spiced macerated strawberry. Made from rows designated for this style of wine and treated like a white wine in the winery, it is crisp and cry with natural fruit sweetness. 13.7% alc. $22.95. 18Feb2010.

Man o War Waiheke Island Rose 2009 (sc) Made from 100% Merlot, this is deep ruby pink - gorgeous and bright. However the smell is like mercurochrome or something reminiscent of childhood cut and grazes remedies. That character carrying through to the palate. Herbal and numbing. The colour and the viscosity of the texture are the best features. 13% alc. $25. 13Dec2009.

Mount Dottrel Central Otago Saignee Rose 2009 (sc) A beautiful translucent watermelon pink colour that just looks so delightful in the glass. Served chilled it's a little shy on the nose to start but later I detect strawberry and cherry with a hint of wild thyme. A light touch of viscosity is rather pleasing and it's fairly dry with concentrated strawberry and a hint of black cherry with extra complexity from a small portion of barrel ferment. Matches well to salty pork. 14% alc. $23.95. 11Nov2009.

Muddy Water Growers Series Waipara Rose 2009 (sc) Light ruby pink in hue, this savoury Rose made from Pinot Noir grapes has hints of darker fruit - darker skinned grapes, hints of purple / violets, later strawberry. A full-bodied style for rose with a savoury depth, with a little bit of grip from the tannins. It's just fabulous with rocket. 13.5% alc. $17. 13Dec2009.

Rockburn Stolen Kiss Central Otago Rose 2009 (sc) A transparent baby pink colour to the eye. There's an earthy nuance to the aroma and the fruit is an amalgam of strawberry, cherry and early season yellow fresh plums. Spicy and zesty to the taste, crisp and fresh, juicy and refreshing with a tangy bite - the acidic backbone could play into its favour depending on the day. 100% Pinot Noir. 14% alc. $18. 13Dec2009.

Te Mania Nelson Pinot Noir Rose 2009 (sc) A deep watermelon coloured hue. A little earthy on the nose - a hint of wild strawberry too. A dry wine to the taste with some viscosity to the texture. Dark red fruits with a savoury undercurrent, a herbaceous note and a salty tang to the finish. 13% alc. $19. 13Dec2009.

Villa Maria East Coast Rosé 2009 (sc) Made from a blend of red grapes, but dominantly Merlot (82%), this fruity tasting, cherry pink-coloured Rosé has cherry-like fruit and a lovely savoury complexity with a flourish of spice to the finish. It has a light viscosity to the texture and a hint of orange peel adding brightness to the end. A dry style wine and refreshing for summer.13 alc. $17. 8Nov2009.

Wooing Tree 'Blondie' Central Otago Blanc de Noir 2009 (sc) Blondie is the very palest of pink with a bouquet a little like a neutral Pinot Gris infused with glace cherries, and subtle strawberry and cherry flavours. Made from 100% Pinot Noir, it has a pleasing viscosity to the texture with a soft mid palate richness and a fresh zing of acidity to the savoury finish. 14% alc. $26.99. 10Mar2010.

Wooing Tree Central Otago Rose 2009 (sc) Pale watermelon pink..Earthy, savoury, just a little funky with a discernable truffle scent. in the palate there's wild strawberry and bitter cherry with vinous sweetness to balance the fruit. texturally quite pleasing, a serious style of Pinot Noir rose. 13.5% alc. $23. 13Dec2009.

Wooing Tree Central Otago Tickled Pink 2009 (sc) Transparent baby pink colour with a rosy glow - candy floss, pale watermelon hues. Cherryish aroma and a lightly viscous palate, sweetish, even a little honeyed, play on strawberries and cream with a squeeze of tangelo and the flavours linger beautifully. Delicious if you like a sweeter style - it's actually made as a sweet wine. I couldn't spit it out in the tasting. 108g/l residual sugar. 11% alc. $35. 13Dec2009 375ml bottle.

2008 Vintage [top] [index]

25 Steps Central Otago Pinot Rose 2008 (sc) Light pink. Quite closed on nose - a hint of boot leather. Earthy, savoury, lots of anise-flavoured herb. It's totally juicy and fresh with a citrussy brightness and a spicy aftertaste. Well-balanced with a touch of sweetness. 14% alc. $24.95. 3Jan2009.

Amisfield Central Otago Saignee Rose 2008 (sc) Pretty light pink. A touch stalky perhaps. Fruit and sugar sweetness with an underlying acidic bite. Quite creamy but not perfectly balanced. Will be better chilled? Rosehips, red berries, lots of fruit flavour and a zesty brightness to the aftertaste. Made from a range of clones of Pinot Noir. 7 g/l rs. 13.9% alc. $25.00. 3Jan2009.

Askerne Hawkes Bay Rose 2008 (sc) Deep pink. Slightly earthy, Pinot-ish scent. Zesty brightness to the palate. An abundance of strawberry and cherry with a zesty undercurrent - even a little spritzy as it dances on the tongue. Tastes like a white wine with a berry infusion - which is what Rosé is, in many ways, made to do. Fresh and easy. A touch of raspberry too. Made from predominantly Merlot. A rare dry style.. 13% alc. $16.00. 3Jan2009.

Bald Hills Friends & Lovers Rosé 2008 (sc) This Central Otago Pinot Noir rosé smells fruity and there's a delicate citrussy infusion to the pretty strawberry flavour. Juicy, just off dry - a lighter, or should I say 'delicate' style - and quite a pleasing drink. Doesn't really give out any clues that it has already had a year in the bottle. 13% alc. $22. 28Sep2009.

Dolbel Estate Hawkes Bay Rosé 2008 (sc) Dark in colour - transparent pinky red with an orange-y glow. Like cake cherry on the nose and rich and savoury in the palate with a sweetish disposition to the savoury backbone and a citrussy finish, it's like a light red wine with the earthiness of Merlot and a plummy backbone - and not tasting like it is one-year-old Rosé at all. A short time in oak has added complexity but no oak flavour. 13% alc. $20. 28Sep2009.

Domain Road Central Otago Rose 2008 (sc) Beautiful baby fluorite mineral pink. Perfumed, pretty floral aromas - pink coconut ice without the coconut. Quite a sweetish palate despite being fermented to off dry. Served chilled, it has viscosity and texture to the strawberry fruit and a spicy, zesty flourish to the finish and really good length. At first not as good as I thought it was going to be based on first note (Sept 08) but good, nevertheless and the longer I taste and muse over it, the more I like it. Made from 100% Pinot Noir. 13.5% alc. 25Apr2009.

Gladstone Wairarapa Rose 2008 (sc) Medium pink. Good nose. Nicely balanced, smooth - almost oily texture, very good structure and flavour. Berries, honeyed orange, spice. Perhaps just a little high toned. Made from a blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Malbec grapes. 7.72 g/l rs. 13.5% alc. $21.00. 3Jan2009.

Hyperion Demeter Matakana Rose 2008 (D) Made from Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, this has a hint of orange to the clear salmon hue. A savoury style of Rose, unusually very dry and while full of dried mint and tarragon to start it sweetens up with a liquorice nuance (like you'd find in tarragon), blackcurrant and raspberry fruit and a piquancy to the finish. Think of it as a very light red that you can serve chilled and enjoy with savoury dishes on a hot summer's day. 13.5% alc. $17. 7 Nov 2009.

Karikari Estate Rose 2008 (crown cap) Pretty light pink hue. Sweetish in palate but with a slightly numbing, clove-like, medicinal thread. Flavours are confectionary-like with raspberry and strawberry fruit and a buttery nuance to the finish. Made in a sparkling style, but it doesn't really redeem it. 12.4% alc. $21.95. 28Sep2009.

Margrain Martinborough Pinot Rose 2008 (sc) Reddish pink. Very shy bouquet - hints of strawberries and red berries. Spicy and just a little astringent with the sweetness of the fruit and residual sugar coming through to balance the finish. Red fruit, apple, citrus and a touch of honey with some viscosity to the texture, Lightly spice with a hint of liquorice as it lingers. 11.8 g/l rs. 13% alc. $24.00. 3Jan2009.

Mount Dottrel Central Otago Saignee Rose 2008 (sc) Pale pink. A little sweet on entry, this is an earthy smelling wine. Not much fruit at all, the sweetness persists - light and pretty with delicate hints of summer berries, citrus and anise-flavoured herbs. 4.5 g/l rs. 14% alc. $23.95. 3Jan2009.

Muddy Water Growers Series Central Otago Rose 2008 (sc) Medium pink. Strong berry scent with a hint of plum, leather and tar. Crisp and zesty entry into the mouth, becoming quite creamy with a savoury undercurrent and a touch of tobacco. Flavourful, bright, zesty and long. Has good body and a little bit of grip and even at room temperature, it is not too sweet. Pinot Noir with natural ferment in both tank & barrel. 7.7 g/l rs. 13% alc. $23.00. 3Jan2009.

Neudorf Pinot Rose - Kina 2008 Nelson (sc) Very pale candy floss / fluorite pink. Delicate scents, hints of strawberries and cherries Light and pretty with just a touch of sweetness to the strawberry and citrus flavours, the latter adding a zesty brightness. A pretty wine with a touch of viscosity to the texture - it is light to medium bodied with good balance of acidity to berry fruit sweetness and a long but delicate finish with plenty of vinous appeal. 14% alc. $22.00. 3Jan2009.

Sileni Cellar Selection Hawkes Bay Cabernet Franc Rose 2008 (sc) Fruit salad abounds on the nose an in the palate. Plenty of summer day brightness and tang. Picks you up, grabs you and holds you. Dried tropical fruit, sherbet, white wine brightness with red wine tints.Has the softness & texture of Pinot Gris but so much more flavour. Lots of appeal. 4.4 g/l rs. 14% alc. $19.95. 3Jan2009.

Soho Hawkes Bay Rose 2008 (sc) Light to medium pink. Slightly earthy aromas and a delicately oily texture that kind of coats the mouth. Plenty of fresh acidity adds brightness to the Christmas plum flavours (red skin / yellow flesh). There's a little but of grip an underlying herbaceousness and although medium sweet, it finishes dry. Medium to full-bodied with a berry fruit richness and a tarragon herb infusion to the gutsy finish. Made by Russell Wiggins at CJ Pask with 100% Merlot fruit. 13.5% alc. $22.00. 3Jan2009.

Southbank Pink Sauvignon Blanc 2008 (sc) Delicate strawberry-water pink. This is made from Sauvignon Blanc and it sure smells like it. Quite full in the palate with an oily texture, it's quite sweet for SB, but then it is a Pink SB. It's like strawberry and capsicum, an odd combination, and then the citrussy notes that characterise many Marlborough SB's kick in. What does the 4% Syrah adds besides the colour, I don't really know. Finishes, crisp, fresh and dry. 12.5% alc. $18.95. 25Apr2009.

Tussock Nelson Pinot Noir Rose 2008 (sc) A light and delicate strawberry-ish, Pinot-ish aromas with a savoury nuance. Quite savoury to the taste, yet with bracing acidity - a Riesling style of Rosé with sweetness to the finish - which is actually quite well balanced. Lots of citrus zing to balance the earthy, mushroomy bloom. Nice finish and length. 20 g/l rs. 13% alc. $18.00. 3Jan2009.

Twin Totara Waimauku Rose 2008 (sc) This blend of Cab Franc and Merlot has a bright orange glow to the pinky colour. Perfumed and floral with rose hips - it smells juicy. Slightly sweet - but more just 'off dry' than medium, it has a lightly oily texture and spice with some citrussy zest and raspberry / unripe strawberry. A little tug of tannins gives this wine serious appeal - there's enough acidity to keep it bright and fresh. A juicy alternative to SB or Riesling.13% alc. $14.50. 20Jun2009.

Waimea Estate Nelson Pinot Rose 2008 (sc) Light to medium pink. A little closed on the nose. A little confectionary in palate but this sits in well with the structure of the wine. Slightly earthy with an underlying zestiness, a savoury spiciness and a creamy richness, A full-bodied Rosé with fruit in the blueberry spectrum. Made from Pinot Noir grapes with partial barrel ferment, this was my #1 of the blind tasting flight. 13.5% alc. $23.00. 3Jan2009.

2007 Vintage [top] [index]

Alexia Hawkes Bay Rose 2007 (sc) Doesn't seem to have the freshness of the others in the blind tasting. Savoury, earthy, a little medicinal. A strong wine, seems to be Merlot-based. Grainy textured and just a little lacking. Probably should have been drunk past summer. 13% alc. $19.95 3Jan2009.

Ascension 'The Rosarian' Matakana Pinotage Rose 2006 (sc) Light watermelon pink with raspberries and dried herbs on the nose, the flavour is all juicy strawberries and spice. Crisp on entry with a lingering sweetness and a touch of viscosity adds richness. ***. 12.5% alc. $24.00. Peter May's Pinotage Tasting: 11Nov2007.

Askerne Hawkes Bay Merlot Rosé 2007 (sc) Pretty ruby pink with abundant strawberry and cherry aromas and the soft, ripe, juicy, spicy flavours, the fruit is sweet but the wine is dry with a slightly grainy texture and just a little bit of grip and the taste lingers beautifully. 14% alc. 3-4 g/l rs. $16. 4Sep2007.
A rich deep pink with strawberry, plum and spice on the nose and more richness than you would expect from a Rosé wine in the palate. With plums, a hint of leather, strawberries, spice, a hint of liquorice and dried herb flavours, it's rounded with smooth tannins, intensity of flavour and a lasting red fruit finish. ***1/2. 23Oct2007.

Auntsfield Pretty Horses Marlborough Rosé 2007 (sc) There's a richness to the bright ruby hue. Tantalising aromas of strawberry, raspberry and cherry and crisp, fresh flavours of cherry and spice with just a touch of savouriness make this dry and textural pink, very very appealing. 100% Pinot Noir. 13.5% alc. $28. *****. 9Oct2007.

Babich East Coast Joe's Rose 2006(sc) There are orange tints to the pinky-red hue of this 50% Pinotage, 50% Merlot blend with bright citrus and strawberry flavours, hints of liquoricey herbs and a savouriness to the off dry finish. ***. 13% alc. $19.95. Peter May's Pinotage Tasting: 11Nov2007.

Bald Hills Central Otago Blanc de Pinot Noir 2006 (sc) A gorgeous, pretty, deep rose water / cherry coloured transparent pink. The nose is delicately floral with wild strawberry, sweet cherry and subtle herb scents and the palate is rich and textural and seemingly quite dry with sweet cherry, hints of strawberry and a delicate herbal / citrus twist to finish and a stonefruit character emerging on the lingering aftertaste. Soft, easy, non-confrontational and drinking surprisingly well for a 2 year old wine . made from 100% Pinot Noir. 14% alc. $14. 27Jun2008.

Coopers Creek Hawkes Bay Rosé 2007 (sc) This blend of equal proportions of Merlot and Malbec is a vitreous pink colour with a lustrous purple glow. It's dry and savoury to the taste with an earthy depth to the red fruit flavours and a little bit of tannin adds grip. It's long and dry with a touch of spice adding brightness to the savoury, earthy aftertaste. 13% alc. $17.00. ***. 13Oct2007.

Esk Valley Black Label Hawkes Bay Merlot Malbec Rosé 2007 (sc) Deep, clear, light ruby. There's an earthiness to the aroma and malbec florals add to the spicy, winey perfume. A full-bodied style of rosé with a slightly oily texture, a delicate hint of tannin, strawberry and blackberry fruit and the earthiness detected on the nose emerging again on the bright fruit finish. With complexity and depth, this well-made, well-balanced rosé follows the quality this label has instilled. 14% alc. $18.99. 14Aug2007.
Clear ruby pink with depth and brightness to the hue, this blend of Merlot and Malbec has a fragrant, lightly floral, strawberry aroma and a spicy, creamy flavour with richness and depth. With strawberry, cherry and blackberry fruit, a savoury undercurrent and a delicate hint of tannin, this full-bodied, dry Rosé is more than just a frivolous fling. It's consistently NZ's best. 14% alc. $18.99. ***** 3Oct2007.

Fromm La Strada Marlborough Rose 2007 (D) There's an amazing textural richness in this almost bone dry wine that has the prettiest pink, watermelon hue. It's sweetly perfumed, like a bowl of fresh strawberries sprinkled with icing sugar, and tastes like strawberries too - strawberries with a little bit of spice and a faint herbal nuance. A touch of viscosity adds richness to the mouthfeel and a touch of acidity on the finish adds a zesty brightness. It's perfectly poised, an absolutely delightful wine. 13% alc. $16.90. 3Nov2007.

Margrain Vineyard Martinborough Pinot Rosé 2007 (sc) There's a richness to the lustrous pink colour. Strawberry scents fill the nose while cherry and plum fruit flavours fill the palate - like fresh, early season, juicy yellow-fleshed that fall off the tree with some shaking. Juicy and lightly sweetish in the palate with a touch of savouriness demarcating the pinot fruit, then the strawberries detected on the nose resurge to linger on the lifted, floral finish. 100% Pinot Noir. 13.5% alc. $24. ****. 13Oct2007.

Matua Valley Northland Rose 2007 (sc) With it's bright, cherry pink colour, this blend of predominantly Pinotage is juicy, savoury and lightly spicy with just a hint of anise. It's 'medium' in sweetness and lightly robust in its structure with enough zesty acidity to balance the sweet red berry flavours and make the finish seem dry. A refreshing light red that should have wide appeal. $15.95. 13% alc. ****1/2. 29Oct2007.
Lovely deep watermelon / ruby with a fluorescent shimmer. A little earthy on the nose and a tug of sweetness and savouriness in the palate with a hint of leather underlying the wild red and black berry fruits. There's a bright, spicy lift to the finish, which is long and succulent for the style. ****. 13% alc. $15.95. Peter May's Pinotage Tasting: 11Nov2007.

Morton Estate Musetta Rose 2007 Hawkes Bay (sc) A deep, rich pink. Red wine nose - a hint of leather. Quite floral, yet spice in the palate, perhaps reflecting the varietal make-up. A full-bodied, flavoursome style - liquorice, concentrated berry fruit, a touch of honeyed sweetness but perhaps just a tad too much. A blend of Merlot and Malbec. 14.1% alc. $17.00. 3Jan2009.

Mystery Creek Waikato Syrah Rose 2007 (sc) Orange tint to the pinky-red hue. Smells like a light red wine - slightly earthy, savoury and gamey with perhaps the merest suggestion of chocolate-coated berries. However the excellent nose is followed by an anti-climax of flavours with unbalanced sweetness and a chocolate / confectionary / bandaid flavours. What it does have in its favour is structure and tannin. Mangatawhiri fruit. 9.5 g/l acidity. 14 g/l rs. 12% alc. 3Jan2009.

Richmond Plains Blanc de Noir 2007 (sc) The palest of pinks with a candy floss lightness, there's strawberry, cherry and rose petals on the nose and juicy to the taste with abundant strawberry and raspberry sweetness, a sherbet zestiness and a touch of creamy vinosity that adds richness and texture. Clean, bright, fresh and breezy with a long juicy finish, it's made from 100% Pinot Noir. 14.5% alc. $19.95. ****1/2. 13Oct2007.

Richmond Plains Nelson Monarch Rosé 2007 (sc) Clear, deep pink almost ruby. Delicately floral and sweet smelling, but surprisingly quite savoury to the taste - savoury and earthy with concentrated 'very ripe' cherry and red berries and a hint of grapefruit too. Made from organically grown Pinot Noir grapes, when tasted straight from the fridge I found the acidic edge just a little harsh. I liked it much better when it wasn't chilled to the bones. 14.5% alc. $19.90. 19Jan2008.

Schubert Wairarapa Rose 2007 (c) There are hints of orange to the pale pink hue, so it stands out not only for its 'real cork' closure but also for its lighter colour. A fuller bodied style of Rosé with a yeasty richness and a spritzy texture, it's bright, spicy and zesty with a touch of sweetness and underlying savouriness but just a little astringent when chilled to the bones. When it's lost the cold edge, it's well-balanced and refreshing and a little reminiscent of a Riesling, even though it's made from Pinot Noir grapes. 12% alc. $20. 19Jan2008.

Sileni Hawkes Bay Cabernet Franc Rosé 2007(sc) Deliciously appealing pink ruby colour, this medium-bodied style tastes deep and earthy and just a little leathery with blueberries seemingly the dominant fruit until summer berries take over the finish. 13.5% alc. $20. 4Sep2007.

Soljans Rakelina Sparkling Gisborne Rose NV Gorgeous ruby-pink hue. Cherry and strawberry aromas with a hint of tar in the distance. Bright-fruited, clean, and fresh with lots of foamy fizz filling the mouth and a Muscat sweetness to the finish. A fun, hot summer day wine that will be best straight from the fridge. Predominantly Pinotage with a touch of Muscat. ***. 13.5% alc. $17.00. Peter May's Pinotage Tasting: 11Nov2007.

Soljans Two Sisters Gisborne Rose 2007 (sc) Deep watermelon pink. Cherry and strawberry aromas with a slightly confectionary, boiled lolly overtone lead into lightly sweetish, medium-bodied palate with an underlying savouriness and a surge of concentration to the lingering cherry fruit finish. ***1/2. 13% alc. $17.00. Peter May's Pinotage Tasting: 11Nov2007.

Sugar Loaf Marlborough Rosé 2007 (sc) Delicate pale pink in colour, it's vibrant and fresh and deliciously juicy with flavours of strawberry and yellow fleshed early season plums. Predominantly Pinot Noir with 8% Riesling in the blend adding vibrancy and acidic lift. 11.5% alc. 4Sep2007.

Te Mania Nelson Pinot Noir Rosé 2007 (sc) Clear, deep pink. Reasonably rich berryish aroma for Rosé. A little sweet to the taste, without the crisp balancing acidity at first but herbal, savoury and spicy rather than fruity, with some graininess and grip to the texture and a zesty tingle left in the mouth after the wine is swallowed. Good straight from the fridge. A great summer refresher! 14% alc. $17.90. 19Jan2008.

Unison Hawkes Bay Rose 2007 (sc) A deep ruby red - shiny, gemmy and bright. Spicy on the nose and a little earthy and leathery in the palate - has this some Malbec in with the predominant Syrah? Full-bodied with a little bit of tannic grip, it has a mouthfilling vibrancy to the finish. I though this best with food. Try with hot smoked salmon on a horseradish-infused cream cheese spread.13% alc. 3Nov2007.

Vavasour Awatere Valley Rosé 2007 (sc) Made from 100% Cabernet Franc grapes, it's such a pretty clear, deep ruby pink and wins points on colour alone. It smells inviting with its lightly floral, strawberry and cream aromas with a hint of a savoury edge and after the aromatic impact, there is pleasing flavour, body and texture too. There's a touch of sweetness to the cherry fruit with a squeeze of tangelo adding freshness to the finish. Perfect straight from the fridge and my top wine of the 'chilled to the bones' tasting, but just a little sweet when it starts to warm up. 13% alc. $24.50. 19Jan2008.

Wooing Tree Central Otago Rose 2007 (sc) Pretty pinkish light ruby, ripe cherry on the nose, there's an earthy depth and richness to the flavour with red and black cherry fruit and a peachiness emerging on the aftertaste.
