Bensen Block Gisborne Rosé 2004 (sc) One of the best Rosé's around this summer, the clear gemmy pink liquid smells of spiced strawberries and cherries. A sweeter style that wants to be well chilled and enjoyed in the sun. 12.5% alc. 10g/L rs. $17. 18Oct2004.

Harrier Rise Kumeu Merlot Rosé 2004 (sc) The colour of a rare rubellite tourmaline set off in the clear bottle with a wild rose on the label, is a very appealing hue. When first opened this is an earthy rather than a fruity Rosé but fresh strawberry flavours soon emerge. A lighter more delicate wine with a lovely tannin structure, a dry palate, a ripe fruity aftertaste and very definitely some raspberry ripple ice cream and hints of spice and liquorice as it lingers. 17/20. 12% alc. $17. 10Jan2005.

There's an upfront spritzy tropical fruitiness at first then more varietal pinot-like flavours of cherry laced with florals. Mount Riley Marlborough Malbec Rosé 2004 (sc) Light salmon in colour, floral smelling, almost creamy textured with a hint of vanilla, a firm backbone, just a hint of liquorice and a citrussy finish. More earthy and savoury than fruity, more of a rosé to have with lunch than as lunch (i.e. a food wine). 12.5% $19.95. 8Dec2004.

Odyssey Hawkes Bay Rosé Cab Franc 2004 (sc) An appealing mid-pink colour. Crisp and spicy, reminding me a little of nectarines poached in wine. Hints of tropical fruit and melon join raspberry and cherry plum on the finish that lingers with a tingly brightness. Predominantly Syrah with a minuscule amount of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. 15/20. 13.5% alc. $18.00. 10Jan2005.

Villa Maria Private Bin Hawkes Bay Rosé Merlot Malbec 2004 (sc) The deepest coloured Rosé in the line-up, a deep pinky red, almost a light red. More colour and zest. 2003 Vintage [top] [index]

Amisfield Saignée Rosé 2003 (sc)Dark for a Rosé, ruby bright, there's lovely weight and structure to this wine. A 'serious' rosé, if you like. Strawberries, cherries, rose petals and spice. This has everything I like about Rosé, the wonderful florals on the nose and the freshness of fruit in the palate. 19Dec2003.
Made from Central Otago pinot noir, ruby pink in colour, spicy and fragrant, brimming with strawberries, cherries and plums, with a lingering dry finish. A 5-star wine. 13.5% alc. 27Dec2003.
This has a neat colour, a gemmy, translucent, ruby pink. Made from 100% Pinot Noir, the smell of freshly picked cherries and strawberries fill the nose and the intense fruity flavours continue to the palate. It's more robust than the usual run of the mill Rosé with a firm spicy backbone, lots of body structure and weight, a great finish with excellent length and a touch of rose petal as it lingers. 13.5% alc. $22.95. 17Mar2004.

Ata Rangi Summer Rosé 2003 Smells sweetish and tastes sweetish too with soft flavours of strawberry and cherry, it's fresh, fruit and refreshing with a touch of citrus lifting the finish. A multi-grape blend including a little Pinot Meunier. Must be served very chilled on a hot summer's day. 13Oct2003.

Gladstone Wairarapa Rosé 2003 (sc) A deep watermelon pink, gemmy in appearance, fruity, floral (as in rose petal). Tropical fruits with hints of pineapple with a zesty spicy peppery backbone and a lingering strawberry aftertaste. Full-bodied, mouthfilling, refreshing and balanced, light enough for a summer afternoon apertif style and heavy enough to enjoy with foods. This would be delicious with ham, strawberries with cream cheese and pepper and BBQ'ed herbed potatoes. 90% CS, 10% Malbec. **** . 29Nov2003.
Dark watermelon with a touch of bronze. quite potent on the nose, laden with summer plums, strawberries and redcurrants. Creamy textured with a touch of leather and a spicy backbone. Rose petals too. Well structured. 8Dec2003.

Esk Valley Rosé 2003 (sc) Light ruby spinel in colour, it's still quite yeasty and just a little earthy on the nose but full of fresh strawberries and red cherries in the slightly earthy palate. Perfect for summer with a crisp sweetness on the finish, it's got good texture and weight and a flavour like strawberry and vanilla icecream lingers. A blend of 70% merlot and 30% malbec with 10 gms of residual sugar well balanced to the acidity. 7Aug2003.

Felton Road Vin Gris 2003 (sc) Made from 100% Pinot Noir grapes, from the big berries of the young vines. Just the lightest pink tinge to the light gold colour. A barrel ferment character and a lactic influence add a caramel nuance to the nose, it smells a bit like chardonnay with a wild yeast overtone. Warm and spritzy in the palate with bright citrus acidity, full-bodied, rich and textural. Berries and yellow plum flavours with a herbal nuance and a touch of strawberry lingers. An unusual wine but totally drinkable. 14% alc. About $26.95. 4Mar2004.
Made from the juice of Pinot Noir bled off as the grapes were crushed, this has the just the slightest hint of pink to the colour. The first taste is strawberry then the smooth mellow oak and spice of the barrel ferment kicks in adding a touch of caramel and chardonnay-like richness. Good body, terrific length, I liked it last time and I like it even better as a pre-taster. 14% alc. $25.95/$22.95. 17Mar2004.

Gibbston Valley Blanc de Pinot Noir 2003 (sc) Good colour. Bubble gum is the first whiff I get on the nose which makes me think Central Otago. Filled with flavours of strawberry and tangelo, it's bright, refreshing, slightly oily with a good mouthfeel and there's some peachy flavours on the slightly herbaceous, off dry finish. A clean wine. A well -balanced wine. A mouthfilling wine if you’re in a sweet-tooth mood. Crisp and fruity with lingering strawberry and citrus. Good. Silver. 29Nov2003.

Kumeu River Village Rosé 2003 (sc) Why are you making a Rosé?", I asked Paul Brajkovich. "Something to drink over summer" he replied. Lincoln Alfresco Harmony Rosé 2003 Boiled raspberry lollies and a herbal character on the nose, Chalky textured with a little spritz, it's sweet yet savoury and a little sweet, it's a more savoury wine, perhaps some Merlot. Stonefruit, grapefruit and strawberry on the finish - the flavours that linger are really nice in fact - it's the best part of the wine. Low Bronze. 29Nov2003.

Margrain Merlot Rosé 2003 (cork) Very alluring 'watermelon tourmaline' colour, rose petals on the spicy, perfumed nose, laden with strawberry flavours that linger nicely after the wine is swallowed. 12% . 8Dec2003.

Martinborough Vineyard Rosé 2003 Rich and spicy, dry and tantalising with a lovely strain of cherry enrichening the palate. Drier than last year's, it seems. Lovely fruit sweetness on the finish without being overpoweringly sweet, there's a bittersweet lingering flavour of berries and pinot noir wine. 500ml bottle. 13Oct2003.

Okahu Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Rosé 2003 They say that Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc are related and the relationship is obvious when you taste this wine. It's made from 80% Cabernet Sauvignon with 10% Merlot and 10% Pinotage but it tastes just like Sauvignon Blanc - and a good one at that - with its pungent, fruity, grassy herbaceous flavours and earthy richness. The Cabernet Sauvignon was unripe when it was picked and this has resulted in the intense sauvignon blanc-like flavour in this palest of pinks. It's the perfect summer Rosé. 24Aug2003.
Today it's been chilled and there is less of that overt sauvignon blanc-like character. It's soft on a creamy palate with hints of strawberries and rose hips. 26Aug2003.
Pale watermelon, Strawberry nose - the most strawberry of the lot. Sweetish strwberry and red berry aroma, a v. slight suggestion of icing sugar coated Turkish Delight. Dry, refreshing, citrussy with a rather luscious mouthfilling strawberry flavour and a slightly sweaty herbaceous finish, Nice balance. Good zestiness for a refreshing summer quaffer. Really improved since last tasted. 29Nov2003.

Redmetal Rose Merlot Franc 2003 A dark ruby spinel gemstone colour, there's raspberry and strawberry on the creamy smelling nose joined by red plum in the palate. There's a creamy character from the malo together with a slight stalkiness (tannin) and subtle leather that gives it bite and balances the sweet fruit. It's a crisp red, a little heavier than most Rosé's, with a subtle nuance of oak and a warm alcoholic kick. It's actually quite moreish and while perfect for the summer, you could drink it all year round. 13% alc. $20.95. 19Nov2003.

Rongopai Merlot Pinot Noir Rosé 2002 This is such a gorgeous watermelon pink, it smells sweet and it tastes sweet and fruity. It's packed with strawberry and cherries and has a touch of citrus to balance the sweetness. A lovely refreshing wine with good balance. It will definitely hit the spot in summer. 6Nov2002.

Sileni Cellar Selection Merlot Rosé 2003 (sc) A floral smelling wine, with rosehip, strawberry and plum, it's reasonably dry with just a touch of tannin and a spicy creamy, sweet berry fruit finish. Crisp, refreshing and oh so summery. Made using the Saignée method, the juice is drawn off the macerating merlot after 2-3 days to go into barrel to complete fermentation, where the remainder of the Merlot stays on skins for up to 3 weeks. 12.5% alc. 4gL rs. $21. 25Aug2003.

Soljans Vineyard Selection Rosé 2003 Made from Gisborne grown Pinotage, this is their first foray into this style. It's a deep dark pink with fragrant spicy berries on the nose and robust in its flavour with raspberry fruit and an earthy richness. Great for their café. 11.5% alc. 1Dec2003.
Red berries galore, raspberry, summer plums (small, yellow fleshed red plums), it has lots of flavour, a touch of sweetness, a tickle of citrus then as the wine warms up it is all strawberries, a whiff of ginger and a spicy freshness on the finish. Made from Pinotage, though the label doesn’t say so. 27Dec2003.

Waipara Hills Marlborough Pinot Rosé 2003 Nice colour. A touch of citrus tea on nose. Seems a little unbalanced and bitter at first, quite sweet/sour on entry then it fills with fruit salad, passionfruit and strawberry with a touch of spritz and peppery spice. Oily textured with some tannins, there's citrus and pineapple on the peppery, zesty, refreshing finish. There's some structure to this wine. You could actually drink a couple of glasses and not get sick of it. Hangon, it’s milky. Malolactic influence perhaps. It's the kind of wine you think ' I didn’t like that', then the after taste is actually quite nice. Maybe it's a Pinot thing that's happening. High Bronze. 29Nov2003.

2002 Vintage [top] [index]

Allan Scott Marlborough Rosé 2002 Made from 100% pinot noir, this is very pale, the colour of watermelon. Strawberry aromas go well with the strawberry, summer berry and rose flavours. Fruity wine with a good crispness to the finish. 15% alc. 7 g rs. Recommend this is served slightly chilled (10-12°C). Not really sweet enough to be a desert wine but would go well with summer berries. 15% alc. 7 g rs. 9Sep2002.

Ata Rangi Summer Rosé 2002 Made from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Meunier. Pale watermelon coloured wine that tastes of watermelon along with pears, summer berries and the sweetness of candyfloss. Fresh and crisp with a clean finish that reminds me of blackcurrants. Margrain Pinot Rosé 2002 This attractive clear pink wine has an attractive aroma of watermelon and strawberry. It's quite rich and a little toasty although hot from the alcohol component. I like the lingering flavour of cherry and strawberry. It's quite balanced in its sweetness. 14.5% alc. 12gms rs. 16Oct2002.

Martinborough Vineyards Pinot Rosé 2002 What a delightful colour. It's the colour of pink watermelon that perfectly matches the lettering on the bottle. Has the freshness of crisp watermelon and the richness of strawberry with a vinous concentration. A delightfully fruity and fresh wine for summer drinking. Serve chilled or as a plate cleanser between courses. Beautifully packaged in a 500ml bottle. 14 Oct2002.

Redmetal Rosé 2002 - Hawkes Bay. Crushed raspberry colour, quite dark for a Rose. Sweeter wine, jammy strawberry flavours, a hint of wood, a touch of spice and plenty of acidity that tingles the tongue. A full rich plummy flavour that lingers with the strawberries. $20.95. 8Jan2003.

2001 Vintage [top] [index]

Ata Rangi Summer Rosé 2001 Watermelon colour Lovely and sweet at first in the palate, but not overly so and definitely not cloying. Strawberry and peach flavours to the fore. It has a small component of petit meunier, which adds savoury note to the finish. Best serve chilled. Tasted 27Aug2001 @ Ata Rangi release tasting.

Borthwick Wairarapa Sangiovese 2001 There's cherry hues to the red of this wine. It's developing well in the bottle, becoming somewhat Syrah-like with its peppery nose and spicy backbone. Dry and savoury, lots of berries – not a juicy Aussie style of wine – not too heavy and not too light. Savoury. I like it a lot. Great food style. 31Dec2003.

Burnt Spur Wairarapa Rosé 2001 Watermelon colour with a nose of raspberry and herb. Crisp apple-like finish making it a very refreshing summer wine. 18Nov2001.

Clearview Estate Chambourcin Blush 2001 Pretty rose salmon colour. This had quite a stinky nose when first opened. 2 days later the stink had gone and it was now fragrant with flowers and herbs, strawberry and beetroot. A little meaty and earthy at first but lifts with tropical fruit, lemon and oily herbs. Reasonable body weight. A nice aromatic style - refreshing for the summer. A muskiness reminiscent of 'pink smoker lollies' lingers. $14. 6Jun2002.

Forrest Estate Marlborough Rosé 2001, a blend of cabernet sauvignon, pinot noir, merlot and shiraz, is one of the best Rosé's that John Forrest has ever made, in my opinion. It is just such a gorgeous deep pink colour and has a lovely rich concentration in the palate with soft strawberry flavours and underlying raspberry/blackberry and white pepper spice. It's a juicy, thirst quenching wine, made in a dry style. Approx. $16 Tasted 17Sep2001.

Murdoch James Renaissance Rosé 2001 Made from cabernet sauvignon and called 'Renaissance' because the vines got a second chance. Rich rose-pink hues, strawberry and herb aromas, the strawberry continuing to the full-bodied palate. Slightly oily-texture along with a crispness, a touch of raspberry and stone fruit and a sprinkle of spice. A lovely rosé wine that has a lifted and refreshing long finish. 13.5% alc. $21. 2Oct2001.

Okahu Estate Shipwreck Bay Rosé 2001 from Northland is predominantly Merlot but has a fruit salad of the vineyard's other red varieties making up the remainder and, to top it off, a splash of stainless steel fermented semillon. Winslow 'Rosetta' Martinborough Cabernet Rosé 2001 Light pink ruby colour, clear and bright. Served chilled this is deliciously refreshing at first, medium to dry with lightly pressed cabernet grapes producing a wine with sweet strawberry, raspberry, redcurrant (ribena-like) flavour. Richly textured. Actually I think it needs a little more acid to back up the fruit sweetness as it becomes fairly cloying after a glass. 18Nov2001.
