Bilancia Marlborough Pinot Grigio 2003 (cork) Very shy with faint winey lemon on the nose, there's nothing shy about the flavour in the mouth with the abundance of lemon, pear, honey, musk and spices, lovely palate weight and concentration and a slightly viscous texture like that of ripe fleshy, juicy stonefruit. The musk and spice have it heading towards the Gewurztraminer spectrum, just like Pinot Gris wines in Alsace do. Off-dry to the taste and simply gorgeous.13% alc. ***** 21Aug2003.
Brick Bay Matakana Pinot Gris 2003 A very good pinot gris, emulating the gold winning 1998 with its balance and class; smooth and creamy textured with a good citrussy tone, a spicy backbone and lingering pear and apple flavours on the long winey finish that has a slightly nutty vanilla nuance. 13.5% alc. $27. 22Jun2004.
Carrick Central Otago Pinot Gris 2003 (sc) Tropical fruit, slightly pineapple-like on the nose, full-bodied, richly textured, ripe and fruity. Nicely balanced. Good wine. Excellent with pork and duck rillettes and pickled walnut paté at the Carrick restaurant. $23.50. 12Apr2004.
Coopers Creek Huapai Pinot Gris 2003 (sc) Pale gold with an oily appearance and a lemony bouquet with gentle hints of honey, it's a slightly spicy wine with rich pear, apple and lemon fruit, a hint of white mushrooms and lingering lemon biscuit flavours with a nice strain of honeyed richness. The texture is oily and as the wine develops the honey will becomes quite dominant. First harvest grapes off the home vineyard. $16. I matched it to baked fillet of salmon glazed with Vipers Bugloss honey and soy sauce. 13%. 3Jul2003.
Corbans Pinot Gris 2003 Rich, lush, a touch of honey with lemon and lime, a creamy texture and a full-bodied finish. The best value Pinot Gris on the market today. 26Aug2003.
Dry River Pinot Gris 2003 A little subdued on the nose when first opened, the dry spicy, lightly floral aromas do not hint at all of the luscious flavours the mouth will be seduced with. Rich and full-flavoured with a viscous texture, flavours of Asian five spice, musk and citrus zest and stonefruits lingering on the luscious finish, this concentrated powerful wine was a sublime match to fennel, apple and oyster mushroom stirfry with a spice coated fillet of pork. 13% alc. 21Jul2004.
Drylands Winemakers Reserve Pinot Gris 2003 Slightly pinky in its hue with citrus scents. Lots of citrus, lemon, grapefruit, perhaps some apple, a bit like riesling, fresh, zesty, medium to full-bodied, mouthfilling with good weight and length. There’s honey and spice in there too. A lifted refreshing style. 13.5% 16.5/20. 7Dec2003.
Escarpment Martinborough Pinot Gris 2003 Quite obvious buttery oak when tasted with the non-oaked styles. This is a beautifully balanced powerful Creamy wine with delicate pear and nectarine flavours and a long, creamy, mealy finish. Cork. $25. 19Oct2004.
Esk Valley Black Label Hawkes Bay Pinot Gris 2003 (sc) Water pale, perfumed and floral with musky tropical fruit on the nose and tropical fruit, pear and nectarines in the palate, it's soft, ripe and just a little spicy with a slightly viscous texture. There's a 'pink smoker' muskiness and a touch of white pepper that lingers. Citrus emerges as the wine persists in the empty mouth. 'Off dry', it's a very pleasing wine to have with or without food - it matched fantastically to pork shoulder chops marinated and baked in a mustard, lemon and honey. A lovely expression of Pinot Gris. 13.5% alc. 12gL residual sugar. 13Nov2003.
Framingham Marlborough Pinot Gris 2003 This is pinot gris the way I like it. Aromatic, citrus, pear and stonefruit, ripe fruit with a spicy, grapey finish. Fairly dry, lovely and refreshing, silky texture, lovely flow. Hot summer day wine. 18.5/20. 8Dec2003.
Gibbston Valley Pinot Gris 2003 Water clear, soft and fruity with a pear-like aroma, spicy, good acidity, nutty leesy with pear and tropical fruit. It's spicy and creamy with lingering passionfruit, pear juice. A terrific pinot gris from Gibbston Valley, lots of fruit, well-balanced and a spicy, creamy finish. 25Sep2003.
Gladstone Wairarapa Pinot Gris 2003 Honeyed, a little musky with neutral grape flavours with a touch of pear, citrus and honeycomb leading into a sweetish finish. Pleasant, balanced wine. 13.5% alc. ***1/2. 8Dec2003.
Huntaway Marlborough Pinot Gris 2003 Lemon hues, nutty aromas, creamed nut texture, it's a little phenolic perhaps. Spicy, slightly peppery, a little viscous, fat, oily, more textural than fruity, there's a touch of sweeter citrus that lifts the hot finish. People found pears, quince, pear drops, lemon and honeysuckle. Add to this a slightly toasty finish. 13.5% alc. 17Sep2003.
Kim Crawford Boyzone Pinot Gris 2003 (sc) There's a warming texture to this slightly viscous, silky wine that emits pear on the nose. It's full of pear flavours with a lacing of lemon, leesy with good acidity and a full-bodied fruit finish. Lovely! 22Aug2003.
Lawson Dry Hills Pinot Gris 2003 (sc) Pale lemon, it's fragrantly perfumed, with pear drop and hints of melon, it's smells sweetish and slightly musky. Spicy in the palate, it's got good weight and texture, a touch of pineapple, pear - spicy, musky white pear with subtle clove and white pepper on the finish. Just off dry. This is very, very good pinot gris. Pear and ripe apple linger sweetly with a lovely fruit juice juiciness. It reminds me little of spiced apples. Terrific balance. Lovely flow. 13.5%. 7Nov2003.
Martinborough Vineyard Pinot Gris 2003 (sc) There's some lovely tropical fruit laced with spicy pineapple flavours that push through the creamy mealiness of the wine. A rich flavoursome wine that has additional complexity from judicious use of oak and that extra year of age. Good length and a lingering sweet-fruited aftertaste. 13.5% alc. $35. 19Oct2004. Pear and citrus aromas lead into a medium to full-bodied wine with lovely balance and mouthfeel. Pear flavours are joined by those of juicy green melons and stonefruit and build to a spicy finish. This smooth, creamy dryish style has a touch of vanilla honey as it lingers. A terrific wine with fantastic length. Compared to previous versions of this wine, the subtle oak is much more integrated and adds complexity rather than flavour to the wine and lets the fruit sing. 13.7% alc. 10Dec2004.
Murdoch James Martinborough Pinot Gris 2003. Pale and watery with neutral grapey aromas. Quite a delicate wine, subdued on entry but with a good attack that builds in the palate. Grapey, musky style, not over exuberant with fruit but long and winey with a lingering spicy citrus finish, perhaps just a little astringent if too cold. Recommended with Caesar salad and when I try the match it is pretty good. First vintage of Pinot Gris from Murdoch James's Blue Rock vineyard. Attractive 500ml bottle. 14% alc. 16/20. 7Dec2003.
Mt Rosa Pinot Gris 2003 The rich, luscious, slightly musky, bright lemony aromas are enticing in this medium styled pinot gris full of soft grapey flavours. It is a sweetish wine but with just the right amount of acidity to balance it. I just love it. Imagine this with fall-off-the-bone roast pork with crackling and a spiced pear sauce. 13% alc. $22.95. 20Jul2004.
Nautilus Marlborough Pinot Gris 2003 Pale lemon in colour, it's fairly neutral on nose with a suggestion of nashi pear but spicy in the oily textured palate with a hint of vanilla and alcoholic warmth. This bottle seems ever so slightly oxidised on the finish and a ripe apple flavour lingers. 14% alc. $24.95. 21Apr2004.
Nevis Bluff Central Otago Pinot Gris 2003 A rich oily style, bone dry with apricot kernel scents and rich, apricot-like fruit flavours. This is ripe and spicy, rich and luscious with zesty spices and a hint of vanilla and although it seems rich and sweet, it has a long, dry finish. $34.95. 8Sep2005.
Palliser Martinborough Pinot Gris 2003 A little reductive on the nose, tight, yeasty, spicy, need to develop a little more or be given time to open up in the glass. Has potential. 8Dec2003.
Peregrine Central Otago Pinot Gris 2003(sc) Smells dry and powedery, it's quite lemony but with good underlying fruit, wieght and texture. A spicy wine, the finish is sweet and long but a little hot from the alcohol, which reads 14.5%. 11Nov2003.
Porters Martinborough Pinot Gris 2003 Perfumed, floral, sweet smelling - beautiful aromas. Spicy with a lightly oily, spritzy texture. Rich, sweet and musky, resembling a combination of peach, banana and pear (casimiroa fruit) on the aftertaste. Beautiful weight, building to a luscious finish. Beautiful wine. At the Gewurztraminer end of the Pinot Gris spectrum. 13% alc. $34. 30Apr2005.
Quartz Reef Central Otago Pinot Gris 2003 (sc) Juicy tinned pears, honey, flowers, spice and sweet citrus, it's rich and oily with good body, just a touch of sweetness and lovely acidity on the finish, try it with food such as an oily piece of salmon and you'll be surprised the difference that food makes to this neutral style of wine. 14% alc. 7Jan2004.
Rabbit Ranch Pinot Gris 2003 Spicy, neutral, hints of apricot with a nuance of ginger and lemon zest on the lingering soft fruity finish. A mellow off-dry wine with lingering grape and stonefruit flavours and a touch of musk that comes through as it lingers. Warm, slightly creamy, cheesy finish. 13%. $22. 20Jul2004.
Rimu Grove Nelson Pinot Gris 2003 Almost water pale with a slight oiliness to the liquid, this smells and tastes like Pinot Gris should. Off dry with zesty sweet citrus, the fuller flavours of pears and white peach fill the palate and good acidity lifts the spicy finish. There's a fragrance here too, a fragrant herb that reminds me a little of mint. No oak detectable although it has been aged in barrel for four months. Lovely weight and concentration, with nice zing and lift to the full-flavoured finish. I think it will be best with food. Try with salmon and fennel or creamy mushrooms. 13.2% alc. 13Feb2004.
Rockburn Pinot Gris 2003 Rich, full-bodied, pear and apricot kernel, lemon peel, a drier wine with lots of depth, classy, balanced with a nutty texture and lingering apricot flavours. 13.8% alc. $24.95. 20Jul2004.
Stonecutter Martinborough Pinot Gris 2003 In a clear bottle to show off the pale gold, brilliant clear colour. Smoky pear on the nose, it’s a little flinty like the bottle with a hint of ginger and subtle musk. It's got more acid in the palate than one would expect but it softens with a touch of banana. Bone dry, rich and powerful, it tastes sweeter than it is and grows in power on the finish. The nose keeps changing, interweaving with a yeasty bready flavour and the bready flavour lingers on the palate too. A wine with mouthfeel and weight. ****. 27Nov2003.
Stoneleigh Marlborough Rapaura Series Pinot Gris 2003 Citrus and musk on the nose and fresh and lively to the palate with quite a zingy backbone. Plenty of sweet ripe tropical fruit, passionfruit, a hint of gooseberry, lemongrass and later, apricot. Will develop some honey traits with a little time. White musk and floral notes linger. Sweet on entry, seems drier on the finish. Interesting wine. Lovely unoaked style. Lots going on. A portion of the blend had 3 months lees contact. 13.5%. 18.5/20.
Tasman Bay Vintage Selection Pinot Gris 2003 Pale in colour with pear and vanilla on nose, it's fragrant with its pear drop aroma but not overly aromatic. It's spicy and nutty first up in the palate with abundant pear laced with lemon, an oily honeyed concentration and a lovely ripe balanced finish. A good wine with a warm, slightly viscous texture and good length. Pinot Gris the way people like it judging by the show of hands on this wine before the variety was revealed. A blend of Nelson, Marlborough and Waipara fruit. 13% alc. $19.95. 27Aug2003.
Tongariro River Pinot Gris 2003 (sc) Smells of pears and lemon drops with a hint of Muscat. Spicy in the palate with a yeasty influence, an oily creamy texture, pears, stonefruit and lemon, and crisp (tart) acidity. Dry finish. Should be good with food. I liked this. 12.5%. 4Jun2004.
Torlesse Canterbury Pinot Gris 2003 (sc) Medium style wine, fragrantly perfumed with musky grape, pip fruit and lemon grass it has a nuance of spicy oak, a slightly oily texture, and a citrus-influenced fruity finish. Some barrel fermentation but you can't really taste the oak, it just adds a hint of vanilla spice and weight. 13.5%. $21. 10Jun2004.
Vavasour Marlborough Pinot Gris 2003 A bright lemony wine, it's full-bodied and flavoursome, mouthfilling and moreish with a leesy backbone, a rich texture and a spicy lifted finish. Nut and pear scents, more nuts than pears, it's ripe and full with lots of flavour for its age. 11Nov2003.2002 Vintage
Akarua Pinot Gris 2002 - Bannockburn, Central Otago. A pale coloured wine with a very aromatic and characteristic Pinot Gris aroma of ripe pear. It's a juicy wine with nutty, spicy, mealy oak, lots of balanced acid and pear, lemon and apple flavours. It is reasonably full bodied and the flavours linger well on the dry finish. $22.95. 15Jan2003.Alan McCorkindale Waipara Pinot Gris 2002 Sweaty sauvignon-like nose, rather lush and weighty in the palate but with some atypical herbaceousness. A lovely drink but not as varietal as I would have expected. A full, ripe finish with sweet stonefruit flavours lingering. 18Aug2002.
Tasted from another bottle, again there is a hint of sweat on the nose but altogether more fragrant with apple aromas to the fore. Apples at first in the mouth but then the pear flavours are quite strong. Excellent texture and lovely rich palate weight. 3 grams r.s. Unlike last year, this has 100% pinot gris. "The gewurztraminer blend didn't work", said winemaker Alan McCorkindale. "Neither did a blend with riesling", he added. 19Aug2002.
A year on and from a screwcapped bottle with a new label - Pear drop on the nose, it's got a slightly powdery, disintegrated palate right now. After a wimpish start, rich ripe pip and stonefruits come forth on the finish that has a little of the 'pink smoker lolly' musky characters - a little too sweet I fear, perhaps lacking a little acidity. 13.5% alc. *** 21Aug2003.
Amisfield Central Otago Pinot Gris 2002 A wine of good colour, with lemon, vanilla and the scents of summer meadows on the nose, this is a rich, ripe, smooth-textured, full-bodied peachy wine that is comparable to unoaked chardonnay, only better. In fact the wine gets better and better as the bottle gets lighter and lighter. The scents become more mealy and quite spicy, citrus and blossomy notes emerge and there's a touch of sweet herbs as well. Yeast lees give the structure, not the oak. ****. 17Jun2003.Ascension Matakana Pinot Gris 2002 (sc) First crop. Fantastic perfume of pears and spice and a smooth mellow flavour with a subtle woody influence. A dry wine with a rich lush texture that makes it good with food. $24.95. 12Nov2002.
Bladen Pinot Gris 2002 Richly concentrated and aromatic wine with hints of nuts and spicy citrus zest that continues through to the mouth. Quite a lush full wine with ripe pear and tropical fruit flavours and hints of apricot on the dryish finish. 19Aug2002.
Bilancia Marlborough Pinot Gris 2002 Quite a spicy style, a fruit salad of a wine with lots of fleshy fruit and nutty, leesy, spicy flavours. Carrick Pinot Gris 2002 Lots of citrus in this tank fermented wine. A clean style, soft acidity, pears, stonefruit, citrus and hints of honey that emerge and linger. Oily texture, green fruits, red apples and a herbal citrus twist to the finish. 20% saw 5-year old oak. Some lees stirring adds a mealy, nutty complexity that lingers. 13.5% 5gm rs. Canterbury House 'The Good Times' Waipara Pinot Gris 2002 Very pale straw. Pungent and perfumed with pear, talc and subtle musk on nose. Warm leesy and oily with pears, apples, grassy herbs, gooseberries, tropical fruit & a touch of honey and spice. Ripe & fruity with a clean, crisp finish. 13% alc. $13.95. ***1/2 4Jun2003.
Chancellor 'The Hamner Junction' Pinot Gris 2002 - Waipara Pale lemon in colour with a slightly herbal, green, pip fruit aroma. Seems a simple wine at first but it gets better the more one sips it. It's a little oily, nutty and lemony with a creamy texture and a sweetish finish that is a little tingly. $20.95. 19Feb2003.
Chard Farm Central Otago Pinot Gris 2002 Good colour for a 2002. This smells like Pinot Gris but the taste gives a momentary suggestion of Gewurz. Warm and oily textured with lemon and pear on the nose, and hot spicy peppery flavours with leesy vanilla, pears and summer herbs lingering. Tank fermented and lees stirred. 3.5% alc. $24.95. 4Jun2003. ***1/2
Corbans Fern Label Pinot Gris 2002 Fairly deep colour for such a young wine. Quite bland and sweeter in style compared to big brother Huntaway. A white flower honey flavour, butterscotch and a sweet fruit finish. 11Sep2002.
Dry River Pinot Gris 2002 Straw lemon in colour, this has lovely, ripe, pear drop and flowery aromas. There's terrific texture in the palate, its rich, a little unctuous, very full-bodied and powerful almost to the point of being overpowering. Seems quite hot and alcoholic in the mouth, bready and leesy with a touch of spice. Quite sweet with lilac flowers and melon jam, it does not show too much acidity at first but the acidity is there, it just lags and emerges like lemon bread on the finish, which is gently sweet. Another wine to let develop as I think this needs more integration. $39 on mail order. 16Feb2003.
Drylands Marlborough Pinot Gris 2002 An onion skin colour with a slightly pink hue. When first opened it tasted a little oxidised and flat but a couple of days later none of that was apparent. It became richly flavoured with baked apples, ripe pear and a nectar-like texture. It's quite a powerful wine without food. 17Jun2003.
Escarpment ‘Station Bush’ Martinborough Pinot Gris 2002 A well coloured, honey gold wine with a rich, appealing, toasty nose and quite unctuous in its creamy texture, almost like chardonnay with layers of butterscotch and a touch of caramel. Fresh peaches, apricots and stonefruits with a touch of lemon to balance the ripe fruit and honey on the finish together with subtle oak that lingers. 14.5% alc. 18/20. 7Dec2003.
Fairhall Downs Pinot Gris 2002 Slightly pinkish tinge to the colour. Aromas of pear with a hint of orange and musk. Sweetish, rich and floral with pears and subtle spice, good acidity, good palate weight and nice length. Good wine. 4/5. 17Oct2002.
Framingham Marlborough Pinot Gris 2002 (sc) A light straw coloured wine that smells sweet, nutty and creamy smelling, a little like creaming soda. Rich oily texture, flavours of pear and apple with a pineapple sage herbaceousness and a lemon twist to the off dry fruity finish. Full-bodied, leesy, thirst quenching and moreish. 13.5% alc. 8Apr2003.
Gibbston Valley Pinot Gris 2002 Lovely rich oily number, sweet ripe fruit, definitely flavours of pear with a hint of musk and something quite juicy on the finish. 11Sep2002.
Gladstone Pinot Gris 2002 - Wairarapa. There's some petillance in the glass of this pale wine. Quite classic pear drop aromas and rich pear flavours in the palate with a touch of juicy tropical fruit. It smells similar to and at first tastes similar to the Peregrine though not as opulent, perhaps due to less alcohol, (13.5%) nor as texturally balanced. The texture is grainy, like a Nashi pear. There's lots of bright acidity with a lovely orange flavour running thru it. Perhaps a touch of spice too. Yes. Very subtle spice. Nice wine. 13.5% 18/20. Pinot Gris Tasting - 11Jan2003.
Grove Mill Pinot Gris 2002 Pear drops and honey on the nose. As usual for this wine, great palate weight. With 16-17 grams of residual sugar this is one of the sweetest in the room. Long finish with lots of flavour. A good wine. 18Aug2002.
Huia Pinot Gris 2002 A great nose. Great palate weight too. A peach sherbet flavour with lots of spice and a lovely succulence. There's a wonderful length on this wine which lingers nice and fully with sweet fruit and juicy citrus sherbet flavours. Quite rich, needs food. 4.5 grams. 13.5%. I think this is the best Huia Pinot Gris I have tasted. Mike Allan attributes it to age - age of the vines and age of the owners. Developing complexities - winemakers are learning the complexity of the grape and the winemaking styles as the vines come of age. Mike also suggests Hong Kong duck cooked in the Tandoori Oven. 'Love-a-Duck;' is the name of the restaurant (is this in Hong Kong?).19Aug2002.
Johanneshof Marlborough Pinot Gris 2002 Again, lovely sweet ripe fruit with tons of delicious flavour. good rich texture and sweet fruit in the pear/peach spectrum. Excellent concentration and ripens with a nice touch of spiciness on the finish. 14% 8 grams. no barrels, no lees work. 19Aug2002.
Kemblefield Pinot Gris 2002 First crop from 3 year-old vines. Stainless steel fermented, lees contact, 1.5 grams r.s. Sweetish fruit that tends to stonefruit in flavour with a toasty characters and richness while lemon zest emerges and lingers on the very long and delicious finish. Yet to be released. 19Aug2002.
Kerner Estate Marlborough Pinot Gris 2002 A soft wine, slightly musky with perhaps a subtle note of oak joining the juicy nectarine and slightly peachy flavours. A ripe appealing wine, just off dry, with good palate weight. Seamless in its flow it has good balance thoughout and a warm rich finish. But watch that whallop from the alcohol. 14.5%. 22Jun2004.
Kim Crawford Boyzone Pinot Gris 2002 (tank sample) Jubey nose. Young and leesy at this stage. quite rich pear drop-like perfume developing well on the finish then nectarine and prickly pear. Juicy finish increasing in power and lushness. 19Aug2002.
Kumeu River Pinot Gris 2002 Straw gold in colour. Nut and pear aromas and perhaps a hint of cheese - as in pear cheese or quince cheese, a character I am sure is derived from the yeast lees. Vibrant fruit flavours, good acidity and a creamy texture with peach, pear, nuts and lifted lemon on the spicy and long finish. It opens up well in the mouth intensifying in flavour with the vibrancy of the fruit. A delicious pinot gris with great cellaring potential and possibly the best yet seen from Kumeu River. Lucknow Estate Pinot Gris 2002 from the Quarry Ridge Vineyard, near Maraekakaho. Toasty leesy aromas, spicy, zesty, quite lifted compared to some of the other ripe textured wines in the room. Ripe, toasty, spiced peach and citrus finish. 19Aug2002. Tasted a few weeks later, this wine was superb with a caparccio of ostrich.
Margrain Pinot Gris 2002 Lees contact, no oak, bone dry and lemony with a creamy palate structure and a spicy finish. A little riesling-like but a richer, weightier, linger finish. 13Oct2003.
Martinborough Vineyards Pinot Gris 2002 Rich, full-bodied, luscious, mealy, use of subtle oak adds some vanilla, a touch of honeycomb too. Lovely mouthfilling wine with a good spicy backbone. *****. 8Dec2003.
Matakana Estate Pinot Gris 2002 - Matakana. Ripe pears and hints of nuts on the nose, clean and rich. A sweeter wine in the mouth with a rich oily texture and lots of glycerol.. Really ripe flavours of pear and musk and ultra ripe grapes. A twist of mandarin lifts the wine. There's a slightly butter candy-like ( toffee/caramel) influence, and perhaps some vanilla and apricot/tropical fruit juices. There's a nuance of creamy cashew on the slightly mealy finish that linger well with stone fruit flavours.. Very pleasant. 13% 18/20. Pinot Gris Tasting - 11Jan2003.
Morton Estate White Label Pinot Gris 2002 - Hawkes Bay Straw gold with appealing aromatics of violets and citrus peel then lots of citrus flavours with spicy oranges, mandarins and lemons as well as apples, hazelnuts and a hint of stonefruit. It's a full-bodied fruity mouthful, juicy and flavoursome with spicy acidity on the warm smoky finish. Well integrated French oak and lees contact adds complexity. Pear-like flavours linger. 13.5% alc. $18.95. 9Apr2003.

Neudorf Moutere Pinot Gris 2002 Pale lemon. Delicate aromas, a little quince-like. Quite strong lemony citrus flavours with a full round texture and then quince, pear and apple emerge. Hot and spicy, with a good deal of power on the finish and a pip fruit finish that lingers sweetly in the mouth for ages. Lightly honeyed. 14% alc. 12Apr2003.
Omaka Springs Pinot Gris 2002 Richly textured wine with good palate weight. Ripe fruit flavours of pear and apple and spicy citrus on the sweet long finish. Good follow through. 19Aug2002.
Peregrine Pinot Gris 2002 - Central Otago. Pear and apple aromas. Warmly textured and rich, this is a fragrant lifted wine with a lovely richness of ripe pinot gris grapes. Creamy and clean it leaves the mouth nicely refreshed with a zing of citrus and ripe apple and pear flavours lingering. And as well there is a whiff of peach in the empty glass. Very nice indeed. The richness and warm texture might have something to do with the 14% alcohol. Develops delicious complexities as it develops and has a full-bodied, well-balanced finish with a fairly unctuous glycerol texture..Very good indeed. Porters Martinborough Pinot Gris 2002 Pale gold. When it's cold it smells chalky and fruity. When it warms up it smells a little sweaty, perhaps a little corky. A medium-bodied wine that is musky and spicy with lemon, melon, loquat, dried papaya and banana an off-dry finish that is just a little short. 14%. 16/20. 7Dec2003.
Quartz Reef Pinot Gris 2002 Lifted and vibrant with wonderful acidity and spice, crisp ripe fruit that remind me of lemons, pears and stonefruit and a textural complexity that many try to achieve. Rockburn Central Otago Pinot Gris 2002 Quite an intense pear drop aroma. A crisp and refreshing wine with a rich leesy palate weight, a little spice and muskiness like that of a gewurztraminer and a strong powerful pear and citrus finish. It's dry with balanced ripe fruit and mealy flavours lingering. The richness of this wine cuts through the oiliness of crumbed sardine well. It is not a match I would have thought of but it definitely went well. 2/3 Lowburn and 1.3 Gibbston Back Road fruit. Saint Clair Marlborough Pinot Gris 2002 Pale lemon in colour. Delicate lemon and pear drop scents. A ripe yet seemingly dryish pinot gris with lots of stonefruit flavours joining pear and apple blossom. Finishes well with a warm vinous concentration and lushness to the texture and a lingering flavour that has a creamed nut nuance along with tropical fruit flavours and a twist of citrus that balances the sweet ripeness well. There is even a touch of old english rose on the very end. Will develop a honeyed character with time, I'm sure. A most enjoyable PG that was a delicious accompaniment to roast pork with a spiced apple sauce. 8Sep2002.

Spy Valley Pinot Gris 2002 Lemon gold. Classic nut and pear flavours with lemon and apple but although these high acid fruits appear, the wine has seemingly soft acidity. Spicy with ripe fruit (or added sugar) and nutty and leesy. However I find the sweetness is unbalanced. There's a 'hot' character that comes out on the finish and a herbal note that lingers. 11Sep2002.

Vin Alto Clevedon Pinot Grigio 2001 A lovely fat, fleshy full-bodied pinot gris with juicy lemon, a touch of earthiness and a steely finish. Totally dry but ripe fleshy fruit gives an apparent sweetness. Pip fruits with a slight muskiness and lemony overtones linger on the soft sensuous, slightly greasy palate, i.e. it slips down easily. 5% oak gives a hint of toastiness. The perfect wine for Clevedon oysters. $28. 24Aug2003.
Babich Marlborough Pinot Gris 2001 Nutty and pear drop aromas with a 'green herb flower' nuance. Lovely flavour, like bubble gum (well I liked the forbidden pink bubble gum when I was a kid). There's a lemony note running through the wine along with pear and golden queen peach. Excellent palate weight and texture in this dry (4 grams residual sugar) wine that lingers with floral notes on the finish. 20% was fermented in old oak and lees stirred, the rest was given tank freshness. $18. 22Mar2002.
Bilancia Pinot Grigio 2001 (Hawkes Bay). Seems to have heaps of residual sugar as it is sweet and almost like toffees when first in the mouth, but there is a lovely underlying lusciousness. Pear, peach and a touch of apricot with some herbs and spice on the finish. The texture is creamy with a lemon zestiness. The name is misleading, as it is not like an Italian Grigio style at all, but more in the Alsace mould. 18Sep2001.

Becomes quite full with strong pear and vanilla flavours on the finish and an aftertaste of vanilla custard with tinned apricots. Good acidity. Not a 5 o'clock wine. Needs food. $25. 22May2002.

Esk Valley Black Label Hawkes Bay Pinot Gris 2001 Ripe rich and luscious yet refreshing. It tastes sweet but is only just off-dry. It is just that the fruit is very ripe. Lovely underlying spice accompanies the stone fruit flavours in this mouthfilling, richly textured, fairly high alcohol (14.5%) wine. $23. 5Nov2001.

Grove Mill Pinot Gris 2001 Nutty aromas with hints of pears. Noticeably sweeter in palate than the Grove Mill Riesling tasted just previously. It doesn't seem to have the acid to back up the sweetness but it has the palate weight. Flavours of ripe poached pear and hints of baked apple/citrus with a full rich sweet nutty texture and ripe pear and peach lingering. Shingle Peak Pinot Gris 2001 Freshy and fruity with 'Queen of the night' aromas and apple, peach and fresh green grape flavours, it's warm and slightly oily with hints of nuts on the lingering finish. 13.0% alcohol. This has a black 'reseal' screwtop but it is so cleverly done that the waitress at the restaurant wanted to open it with a corkscrew. Dry River Estate Pinot Gris 2000 Straw gold in colour and emits honeyed aromas with a soft fragrance of lemon and honeysuckle. In the mouth are flavours of nuts, honey, sweet grapefruit and pears with a citrus layer on the finish. It's rich, creamy, leesy and warm wine with an oily tending towards viscous texture, pleasant not overly done. A little sweetness emerges on the finish. This wine improved as it sat in the glass while I wrote my notes and I think it is a great cellaring prospect although delicious now. Still with only one bottle per customer, it's the kind of wine you would save for the right occasion. ($33.00). 18Mar2001.

Nice balance with that residual orange-juice sweetness. A very easy drinking style with a little bit of honey, blossom flowers and spice linger on the finish. Bright and friendly. Grove Mill Pinot Gris 2000 Very ripe, passionfruit, stone fruits and apples. Quite luscious but seemingly drier than last years version, however the higher acidity is what makes it seem drier. Margrain Pinot Gris 2000 (tank sample) Lemon flavours at first then follows a full-bodied richness of ripe pear flavours with a honey-like texture. Peregrine Pinot Gris 2000 Spritzy little number - perfumed with nice mouthfeel. Later, when spritz went away, aromas of pear drops and creaming soda emerged. I though it was a gewurztraminer at first. Faint hint of pears along with spice and musk and balanced lemon lingers. 9 May 2001

Quartz Reef Pinot Gris 2000 (Central Otago), 1st bottle: Flat and dull - a little cork taint perhaps. Hot, oaky, spicy. 2nd bottle: Nuts & citrus on the nose. More pronounced citrus character in the palate with a leesy toasty richness. Nutty complexities throughout. A touch of creaming soda and spice. Only about 6 people liked this wine. Ata Rangi Pinot Gris 1999 Rich lemon colour. Mineral, soft lemon flavour with pleasing residual sugar. Soft acid with a touch of zinginess. Full and elegantly rich. Lovely length - soft and peachy and almost floral. A good food wine although delightful on its own. First PG for Ata Rangi. Harvested at 26 Brix and 1/3rd fermented in oak. 20g/l residual sugar. $28.00. 23Aug99.
Brick Bay Matakana Pinot Gris 1999 Rich meal wet hay aromas. Quite intriguing. One of the class likened it to 'fresh sileage', a smell she absolutely loved. A rich, flavoursome full bodied wine with an ever so slight suggestion of oak - which may not be oak but perhaps a complexity of bottle age, before ripe pear and quince play on the palate. There's a hint of honey too. A beautiful example of NZ pinot gris. 9May2002
Fairhall Downs Pinot Gris 1999 Intense poire-william aromas with a hint of vanilla and honey and intense pear-drop flavours in the palate followed by a flavour somewhat reminiscent of sucking on an apricot kernel while a sweet herb-like flavour and the merest hint of ginger spice makes an appearance at the end. Goldridge Matakana Pinot Gris 1999 ($14.95) is quite a developed colour for a young wine. Steely lemon, lanolin, buttery oak and its rich full body will make this wine popular with Chardonnay lovers. *** Feb 2001
Grove Mill Marlborough Pinot Gris 1999 Made in the lush style, I reckon if you open it on a hot summer's day it will evaporate very quickly because it is just so drinkable. When first tried, I found delicate, pear-like aromas with a soap-like floral scent but it opened up as it sat in the glass, becoming more pungently aromatic with a dash of citrus. Concentrated fruit in the palate with peaches, pears, apricots and orange blossom, tropical fruits and pineapple - layers of ripe fruit flavours that wax and wane. Sweet oranges on the finish. It's a beautifully balanced wine with a slightly oily texture, good acidity and a lovely sweetness - but perhaps too sweet for dry wine lovers with its dollops of sherbet and sugar. However, I loved the richness and weight of this wine. About $23. WOTW 19Sep1999.
Huia Marlborough Pinot Gris 1999 Lovely rich palate with excellent weight and great texture. Pears and flowers are the main flavour profiles and these intensify on the finish. Very dry (4 grams residual sugar). Tasted 9/99 NZWTF.
Peregrine Central Otago Pinot Gris 1999 There's a brilliant yellow glow to this wine. Very dry and lemony at first, then the weight and roundness of the wine shows itself as it opens up. Very honeyed on the finish (but not the botrytis kind). Yummy finish - sweetish and floral. 22Sep99.

Babich Marlborough Pinot Gris 1998 Fresh, zingy aroma. In the palate it has high alcohol, big body, medium viscosity, low acid, pears and citrus (orange zest) flavour and a sweetish finish with a luscious lingering citrus zest/orange honey aftertaste. I wonder about the alcohol though. At 13.5% it makes it really 'hot' in the mouth and detracts a little from the overall enjoyment of the flavour at first, but drink enough and you will enjoy yourself regardless. Brick Bay Matakana Pinot Gris 1998 A first vintage wine off the Brick Bay vineyard overlooking Kawau Bay, it's got a vinous aroma and in the palate it's zingy at first with soft, tropical fruit characters rounding out the mid palate and a full-bodied lush finish which lingers well. Nicely balanced and pleasant drinking. Good wine. About $23. WOTW 11Apr1999.
Dry River Pinot Gris 1998 Lush, 'minerally, nutty, full, rich, hints of viscosity, reasonable hit of alcohol and lingering flavours'. As the wine eveolved in the glass the aromas were of pear drops mingled with flowers with hints of cheesy, leesy characters. The long finish is sweetish with peachy stone fruits emerging. Good cellaring potential. $30. 13Mar99.
Kumeu River Pinot Gris 1998 While still a baby, it has the seductiveness of an Alsacian cousin. Hints of pear on the nose and lots of pear in the palate with a touch of oiliness and a lovely sweet finish. The wine has a nice 'feel' (texture) and while it is bone dry, the low acidity gives the perception of sweetness. Made in small stainless steel casks, without malolactic or oak influence. Ransom Clos de Valerie Pinot Gris 1998 (Warkworth) Pale lemon colour. Unusual aroma - earthy, minerally and hints of citrus fruits. In the palate, immensely fruity. Fresh, citrus - lemons and grapefruit - at first but changing to pears mid palate then tending to tropical fruit flavours, especially pineapple, on the finish. Although the wine is extremely dry it has ripe fruit sweetness which lingers on the finish. Alcohol content is 14%. 21/11/98 Rating V.V. Good.
Sandihurst Pinot Gris 1998 Richer colour. Apple aromas. Oily, citrus, quite juicy at first but there's a hint of rotten fruit? European style. Dry. Hot, nutty finish. Shingle Peak Marlborough Pinot Gris 1996 Quite an unctuous quality without being too obvious. Some riesling like characters - honey, limes and lemons, and lifted acidity. But fills out in a way that riesling can't, finishing with heaps of body (similar to that of a chardonnay) with flavours of nuts springing to mind and lots of lemon. Tasted 21/1/99. ****1/2
