[2015] [2014] [2013] [2012] [2011] [2010] [2009] [2008] [2007] [2006] [2005] [2004] [2003] [2002] [2001] [2000 and older] [index]

Although some of these tasting notes may be found elsewhere on this site, this page brings together most of my 2010 & 2009 vintage Sauvignon Blanc notes, listed alphabetically by producer. Click here for rating systems and abbreviations.

In my notes 'gooseberry' refers to the South Island green gooseberry unless otherwise specified. Cape gooseberry and Chinese gooseberry (kiwifruit) are different fruits.
Following the wine names, the wine bottle closure is indicated. (sc) = screwcap, (c) = cork, (p) = plastic.

2015 Vintage [top] [index]

Ana Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2015 (sc) Made by Eradus Wines the bouquet is passionfruit and gooseberry with a veil of lime, the lime more prominent in the full bodied palate. Classically herbaceous with fresh cut grass nuances, a flinty undercurrent and apples and gooseberries coming to the fore on the fumé finish. Very very dry. A blend of Wairau and Awatere fruit. 13% alc. NZIWS Gold Medal Tasting. 8Sep2015.

Aotea Nelson Sauvignon Blanc 2015 (sc) Crisp, fresh, grassy and herbaceous with a soft oily feel to the texture, it becomes quite a warm mouthfilling wine - fume if you like - fill of tropical fruit salad with touches of tarragon and herb-infused honey that gives a sense of lusciousness as the pungent flavours linger while racy acidity adds brightness and tingly zing. 13.5% alc. NZIWS Gold Medal Tasting. 8Sep2015.

Brancott Estate Limited Edition Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2015 (sc) This stunning ‘Into the Blue’ World of Wearable Arts bottle fulfils the expectations for a wow taste from the wine inside and it does not disappoint. Fantastic full on pungent aroma that is so classically old-fashioned with full, rich, mouthfilling, bold bright passionfruit and gooseberry flavours with the fleshiness of peach and zingy notes of orange zest, coriander and lime. Exciting wine. 13% alc. NZIWS Gold Medal Tasting. 8Sep2015.

Cloudy Bay Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2014 (sc) Straw gold in hue with touches of stonefruit and citrus infusing the slightly sweaty herbaceous bouquet, then abundant pineapple, citrus and greengage plum flavours fill the vibrantly tangy palate. Pungent and expressive with a finish that lasts and lasts, it’s not too aggressive which makes it a very consumer friendly style. While pricey, it lives up to the quality expectations of this benchmark label. 13.5% alc. $33.99 10Jun2015.

Lake Chalice Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2015 (sc) A light fresh style with a bright citrussy zing, this is classical Marlborough with just the slightest suggestion of sweat. It has subtle touches of gooseberry, a hint of lime and a salty tang that makes it so quenching and refreshing. 13% alc. NZIWS Gold Medal Tasting. 8Sep2015.

Lake Chalice The Raptor Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2015 (sc) This has a lovely, rich, sweet fleshy bouquet of peaches, summery herbs and lemonades. A pungent, old fashioned style with powerful flavours of roasted red capsicums, passionfruit and juicy tropical fruit where touches of pineapple add to the overall allure. A bit young at this stage of its life - it leaves for me a gummy mouthfeel – counteract that with food. But overall yum, delicious. 13% alc. NZIWS Gold Medal Tasting. 8Sep2015.

Marisco The Kings Favour Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2015 (sc) The bouquet of this wine evoked mages of the long grass of summer fields insterspersed with nettles, dandelions and herbs,. Tropical fruit, gooseberry, capsicum and lemon fill the palate. A bright, zesty, summer stunner with a flinty / steely undercurrent that makes the wine shimmer and citrus and gooseberry imparting intensity to the bold pungent finish. Fresh and delicious. 12.5% alc. NZIWS Gold Medal Tasting. 8Sep2015.

Matua Single Vineyard Awatere Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2015 (sc) Straw gold in hue with quite a powerful, pungent bouquet but surprisingly quite soft in the mouth with loads of vibrant passionfruit and summer herbs, a burst of juicy lime / grapefruit and a subtle smoky nuance to the lingering finish. Clean and fresh with seamless flow all the way down to the toes. "Perfect for in-season Bluff Oysters," says Sharon sitting next to me adding they are in season now. I think it's 'Yum' with or without! Gold NZIWS 2015. 14% alc. $29.99. 9Mar2016.

NZIWS Gold Medal Tasting. 8Sep2015. Music Bay SPRING Lighter Alcohol Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2015 (sc) Light juicy smelling wine Slightly spritzy in the palate that makes it seem so fresh and vibrant - ‘celery’ Neil would say. Refreshing sherbet-like tingles of oranges, lemons and limes with SB’s signature herbaceous tang. 9% alc. NZIWS Gold Medal Tasting. 8Sep2015.

Rapaura Springs Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2015 (sc) Vivaciously aromatic and full of fresh, juicy passionfruit, gooseberry and grapefruit flavours with a touch of tomato stalk and Marlborough’s famous pungency and herbaceousness that is so vibrant and punchy. Trophy Open White Air NZ Wine Awards 2015. 13.5% alc. $14.99. 9Dec2015.

Saint Clair Pioneer Block 3 Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2015 (sc) The softly herbaceous aroma with gooseberry and sherbet to the fore doesn't hint of the complexity within this vibrant, mouthfilling, concentrated sauv. The tropical / peachy fruit is almost luscious in its ripeness with interlayers of juicy yellow plums, and finishing with a terrific citrus and kiwifruit zing. 13% alc. $23.99. 2Dec2015.

Saint Clair Premium Selection Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2015 (sc) Palest of citrine with an adamantine lustre to the hue. Bursting with green passionfruit both on the nose and in the mouth – it's vibrant and fresh and juicy and fruity with a vivacious brightness and a long flavoursome rounded finish with the classic character of cut grass and loads of zingy citrus and tropical fruit. Easy to see why people around the world love NZSB. 13% alc. $13.99. 10Feb2016.

Savee Sea Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2015 (sc) Quite a flinty steely smelling wine - I get apples and Neil would say capsicum. A lovely light fresh attack on the palate of juicy sweet citrus and tropical fruit salad with touches of honeysuckle and a savoury herb note. Quite grassy and zesty on first tasting with a flinty, steely, earthy, herbal finish. Made by Awatere Wines. 13% alc. NZIWS Gold Medal Tasting. 8Sep2015.

Selaks Founders Limited Edition Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2015 (sc) Grapefruit, tangelo juice, aromatic herbs and honeyed oak on the nose introduce this rich, textural, full-bodied mouthfilling style, It’s bright, zesty, zingy and aromatic with touches of coriander, lemon and tangelo with ripe juicy gold kiwifruit and gooseberry flavours and a classically pungent finish where passionfruit comes to the fore. Sileni The Straits Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2015 (sc) Powerful powdery / chalky aroma - passionfruit, peach, floral notes too. Green passionfruit and melon are the primary fruit in the chalky textured palate with zesty citrus vibrancy and grassy gooseberry pungency. Quite grainy texture with loads and loads of sweaty notes filling the powerful finish. 13.5% alc. NZIWS Gold Medal Tasting. 8Sep2015.

Outstanding for me. 13% alc. NZIWS Gold Medal Tasting. 8Sep2015.

Stoneleigh Rapaura Series Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2015 (sc) A bold aroma of passionfruit, gooseberry and grapefruit and a mouthfilling richness to the vivaciously pungent flavours. SB as I love it - full and concentrated with flavours of passionfruit and fleshy peach - some complex yeast notes and a creamy vanilla bread undercurrent - a powerful and delicious wine with bright tangy bursts of orange zest and grapefruit and a long, mouthfilling finish. 13.5% alc. NZIWS Gold Medal Tasting. 8Sep2015.

Stoneleigh Wild Valley Wild Fermented Sauvignon Blanc 2015 (sc) Quite a pungent aroma in an intriguing kind of way, there like a sweet fragrance with an earthy yeasty complexity. A little sherbety in the palate – slightly spritzy even, like fizzy sherbet lime lollies the sweetness of the confectionary balancing the sour citrussy flavours, especially grapefruit. Yes there are fizzy sherbet lollies of all the different flavours, even the pink one that has a musky allure, plus there’s a classical grassy herbaceousness to the finish The kind of wine that would be just great with Chinese sweet and sour. All in all, however, this is sophisticated style of Sauvignon Blanc, but it does need food. 13% alc. $18.99. 14Aug2015.

Sugarloaf Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2015 (sc) A delicate aroma. but lovely full, rich, juicy flavours of passionfruit, pineapple and stonefruit with tangy summer herbs and nettles, finishing with a zing of tomato stalk and lime. 13% alc. NZIWS Gold Medal Tasting. 8Sep2015.
Perfumed aromas of citrus, gooseberry and green bean are more pronounced in the palate that seems soft before the powerful pungency and ravishing acidity of New Zealand’s most famous grape variety kicks in. With honey, tangelo, coriander, passionfruit, pineapple and lingering tingles of grapefruit and lime, it's a full on Sauvignon Blanc that must be chilled. 13% alc. $17.99 . 6Jan2016.

The Sounds Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2015 (sc) Grassy / herbaceous / slight play dough aroma with subtle sweaty apple notes. Crisp and flinty in the palate - very green, edgy - almost malic - plenty of mtx characters here together with passionfruit, peach, green apple, capsicum and bean with a roundness to the finish thats tinging on luscious where orange zest and herbs come to the fore - lots happening in this wine as it opens up in the glass and the finish is juicy and long.13.1% alc. Quenching and delicious. 13% alc. $12.99. 30Sep2015.

Villa Maria Private Bin Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2015 (sc) Pale lemon in hue with a bouquet that radiates sunshine on a dismal winter day - the scent is delicately herbaceous with abundant green tangy fruit with gooseberry, feijoa and kiwifruit coming to mind. Initially brassy and fresh in the mouth with a pineapple / lemonade zing and a strong herbaceous finish that's accented with lime but overall quite a soft style with a sweet fruity aftertaste. Matched to chilli marinated mussels - the mussels are super strong tasting and the wine tames the chilli heat. The best match was stewed feijoa on brown rice crackers - a delicious contrast of sweet and sour and to me a much more exciting match.13% alc. $0.00. 18Jul2015.

Villa Maria Reserve Wairau Valley Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2015 (sc) Straw gold. Pungent lively bouquet with classical tropical fruit and gooseberry and a grassy / herbaceous tang that follows through to the palate. Glossy lemon gold. Ravishingly pungent with the unmistakable aroma of this variety that is so famous in New Zealand – there's a lovely fumé (smoky) note to the bouquet with passionfruit, pineapple, tropical fruit and a herbaceous zing that carries through to the juicy palate where fleshy stonefruit joins the fruity array. Soft, almost oily in texture, finishing with a zesty mandarin zing and a lingering herbaceous pungency. This is really yummy SB in my opinion and many non SB drinkers in the room thought so too. Great stuff. Gold Easter Show. Gold NZIWS. 13% alc. $21.99. 24Feb2016.

2014 Vintage [top] [index]

Aotea Nelson Sauvignon Blanc 2014 (sc) Loads of green connotations on the nose, it's pungent, grassy and herbaceous with gooseberry, capsicum and lime that follow through to the full-flavoured creamy palate with an exotic tropical fruit and fume almost tobacco-like tang. Lots going on in this full flavoured wine. 13% alc. NZIWS Gold Medal Tasting. 8Sep2014.

Dog Point Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2014 (sc) While a light lemonade hue in the glass, the concentrated grapefruit aroma suggests this is a very serious wine and the taste confirms it. Forrest Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2014 (sc) In the glass the wine is a light yellow gold colour and has full throttle aromas of gooseberry, capsicum, lime and powdered dried basil. The flavours are scintillatingly fresh and just so full of punch and verve with juicy pineapple, tangelo, feijoa, honey, capsicum and herbs providing a delicious sweet/sour vibe. The honey is like when you add a touch to a dressing – it balances the tartness of the tangy acidity and at the same time adds a touch of viscosity. The alcohol in this super wine is slightly lower than in many Sauvignons, clocking in at 12.5%. 9Jan2015.

Forrest The Doctors' 9% Alc Sauvignon Blanc 2014 (sc) It’s a straw gold colour with racy citrus aromas that are absolutely brimming with zest and a tangy herbaceous note adding brightness. Lots more of the citrus with touches of gooseberry recur in the palate with a little honey – a bit like you get in a home made lemon and honey drink. I love this lighter style. It has Sauvignon Blanc's pungency but it has a Riesling-like vibe. A spritz to the texture becomes apparent on the finish. Gorgeous summer day drinking served chilled to the bones. Made by Forrest. 9% alc. 9Jan2015.

The lemonade hue is a clue to a new vintage wine and with its pungent herbaceous aroma and bright tangy, citrus, herb, flint and grilled pineapple flavours it couldn’t be anything other than our nation's number one white variety. Fresh, lively, perfect served ice cold as a quenching and delicious summer sipper. 12.5% alc. $12.99. 5Nov2014.

A delicious, thirst-quenching wine with a lightly oily texture that is smooth and satisfying. 13% alc. NZIWS Gold Medal Tasting. 8Sep2014.

Saint Clair Pioneer Block 1 ‘Foundation Block’ Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2014 (sc) Almost the polar opposite of the Premium wine, this is pale straw in hue, the bouquet is dried pineapple and purple basil (that smells a little like cats pee) and the taste is so much more sweaty and saline with citrus that’s like a combination of lemonade and grapefruit. There’s a fleshy stonefruit richness that ripples through but it is the scintillating tartness and the flinty undercurrent that steals the show. A well-balanced combo of sweet/sour/dry that is not so much of a carefree sipper but would be a humdinger match to fresh oysters or mussels. 12.5% alc. $22.99. 18Mar2015.

It’s smooth, flowing, almost creamy with tasty melon, citrus and tropical fruit, a zingy herbaceousness and great acid spine. Super bright, bouncy, great tasting sauv. 13% alc. $15.99. 18Mar2015.

Saint Clair Wairau Reserve Sauvignon Blanc 2014 (sc) Unmistakably sauvignon blanc with a new vintage pale lemon hue, this is as fresh as a daisy pushing up through just cut grass, the pungent aroma simply leaping out of the glass. Bright, tangy and herbaceous tasting with a vibrant fruitiness reminiscent of old-fashioned gooseberries (goosegogs) and passionfruit, it’s powerful and flavourful with a zesty brightness to the long zingy finish. Deserving winner of the Sauvignon Blanc Trophy, AirNZ 2014. 13% alc. $31.99. 26Nov2014.

Aronui Single Vineyard Nelson Sauvignon Blanc 2013 (sc) Bright and fresh with summer herb, capsicum and pineapple scents, it's quite linear at first in the palate with green apple notes and green melon, and served chilled it reminds me of an ice block with a zesty zing - it's like tropical fruit with loads of orange, lemon and grapefruit zest. The texture is intense and gravelly with seemingly high acid, it finishes dry with some sweaty notes as the flavours linger and has remarkably good length. 12.5% alc. $21.95. 16Dec2013.

Brancott Estate Letter Series 'B' Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2013 (sc) The bouquet is creamy with nuances of funky wild yeast influence here. Domain Road Central Otago Bannockburn Sauvignon Blanc 2013 (sc) I chose this wine as I thought a little bottle age would add complexity and I was right. And it is full of lemon in the palate - lemon grass, lemon basil, lemon lollies, preserved lemon zest and lemon-infused spices. Quite yeasty, almost bready, with quite pleasing green notes of capsicum and apple coming through to balance the juicy tropical fruit sweetness to the almost luscious lingering finish. This is picking up a funky character that not only comes from wild yeast ferment in barrel but also from the intriguing developing Sauvignon Blanc notes that come with a little age. Overall it’s a smooth, rich, powerful and tantalising wine with an exciting fumé character in the background. Urlar Gladstone Sauvignon Blanc 2013 (sc) Light gold. Quite restrained on the nose – there's a flinty earthy character with melon and Watties fruit salad also coming to mind. The taste is poles apart from the 'classic' Marlborough style, but this is not Marlborough. It is also organic and partially oak fermented. It has quite an oily texture and seems savoury and a little toasty to start with powerful green bean flavours but delicate tropical fruit bursts through and reminds me of custard and fruit salad with a tangy citrus zing to the much brighter finish.
