2005 vintage

Last updated 23 Mar 2008

[2007] [2006] [2005] [2004] [2003] [2002] [2001] [2000 and older] [index]

Although some of these tasting notes may be found elsewhere on this site, this page brings together most of my 2005 vintage Sauvignon Blanc notes, listed alphabetically by producer. Click here for rating systems and abbreviations.

In my notes 'gooseberry' refers to the South Island green gooseberry unless otherwise specified. Cape gooseberry and Chinese gooseberry (kiwifruit) are different fruits.
Following the wine names, the wine bottle closure is indicated. (sc) = screwcap, (c) = cork, (p) = plastic.

2005 Vintage

3 Terraces Wairarapa Sauvignon Blanc 2005 (sc) Rich, pungent, sweaty and grassy with sweet fruity flavours where gooseberry, melon and apple are to the fore with a rich of passionfruit coming through on the finish. Rich and flavoursome with melons lingering on the aftertaste. 13.5% alc. 2.5g/l rs. 7.7 g/l TA. $24.95. 8Sep2005.

Allan Scott Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2005 (sc) Racy and bright with juicy gooseberry and yellow guava with a crisp, pungent grapefruit finish and loads of herbs. Definitely yum. 13% alc. $17.50. 19Sep2005.

Allan Scott Prestige Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2005 (sc) Gooseberries on the nose and a richness in the palate from the partial barrel-ferment which contributes to the creamy texture. Lots of greens - grass, herbs, gooseberries and limes - with a melon and peasy character coming through and a crispness to the long, full-bodied finish. 13% alc. 2.5g/l rs. $30. 19Sep2005.

Astrolabe Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2005 Sweaty characters on the nose characterise this dry, fresh, racy, herbaceous style with green bean and capsicum over gooseberry with plenty of limey citrus on the rich, pungent finish and lingering tropical fruit. 13% alc. $18.95. 10Aug2005.
Fresh and bracing with pungent herbaceous aromas and mouthfilling flavours of green bean and capsicum over gooseberry with a slightly oily texture and plenty of limey citrus on the rich, vibrant finish with melon and tropical fruit lingering for ages. 13% alc. $18.95 special. 7Dec2005.

Auntsfield Long Cow Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2005 (sc) Aromatic and lifted with a leesy lemony note. Rich in the palate, concentrated and creamy with tropical fruit to the fore and a crisp, grassy note to the finish where a whisper of oak emerges. Quite delicious. Match it to food - Yes! Drink on its own - yes! Highly recommended. 13.5% alc. $22.50. 12Sep2006.

Bensen Block Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2005 (sc) Pungent capsicum, gooseberry and herbs on the nose, tropical fruit and citrus in the palate. Still bright and fresh with lots of herbaceous greens and melon and apple flavours lingering on the spritzy, pineapple finish. Two years on from vintage and still very approachable with hints of bubble gum and a brightness to the lingering aftertaste. 13.5% alc. $15.95. 8Sep2007.

Blind River Wines Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2005 (sc) Crisp and herbaceous with grapefruit-like citrus making a statement over the grassy backbone. A little sweet on the fruity, juicy finish where it is all tropical fruit which nicely balances the acidity. 13.5% alc. 9Nov2005.

Borthwick Wairarapa Sauvignon Blanc 2005 (sc) When first tasted in a line-up of 23 sauvignon blancs, I thought this was strange, like it had some gewurz mixed in with it, or something. Smoky aromas and flavours of musk and apples with a touch of spice, slightly redeeming itself on the finish with a grassy, herbaceousness and the apples coming through to linger. It seemed atypical but the next day there is no hint of that gewurz-like thing at all. There's a hint of oak on the nose and a mealy richness to the flavour from 5 months aging on yeast lees, with lots of herb on gooseberry backbone and a dry , juicy finish with, of course the classic Wairarapa apples coming through to linger. Ten percent oak adds richness and softness to the palate. 13.5% alc. $20.95. 3Dec2005.

Brookfields Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2005 (sc) Fresh, grassy and grainy with fantastically vibrant summer herbs and punchy gooseberry flavours with a long, slightly zest, pungent, seemingly dry finish. 13.5% alc. 5g/l rs. 8.25g/l TA. $18.95. 8Sep2005.

Cable Bay Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2005 (sc) Crisp and juicy with lots of lively acidity and a creamy richness to the texture with juicy kiwifruit mid palate and tropical notes to the long, fresh finish.13.5% alc. 4 g/l rs. $21. 19Sep2005.

Carrick Central Otago Sauvignon Blanc 2005 (sc) Pale in colour, it smells of wet hay and green apples then in the palate it is a little oily and acidic with sweet herbs, lemon peel and apple seeds. Seems a little dilute and lacks the intrinsic pungency of sauvignon blanc. 20% fermented in older oak barrels. 12.5% alc. $18.50. 27May2006.

Charles Wiffen Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2005 (sc) Abundant gooseberry on the nose, ripe and fruity in the palate, melon, herbs, crisp and fresh, with mid palate richness and good length. Increasing in power as it lingers with a grassy pungency. 13% alc. $20. 22Aug2005.

Charles Wiffen Reserve Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2005 (sc) A little more subdued on the nose but bright and fruity in the palate with zingy citrus/grapefruit acidity and a creaminess to the long pungent, tropical fruit finish. Lovely mouthfeel. 13% alc. $23. 22Aug2005.

Church Road Marlborough Hawkes Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2005 (sc) With grilled pineapple and green beans on the nose, this oak aged savvie shows richness and power with the mellow oak toning down the softly pungent melon and tropical fruit flavours. There's powerful acidity underpinning the wine with a subdued yeasts lees influence and a slightly grainy texture and the stonefruit finish is long, juicy and flavoursome. An excellent older example of the style. 14% alc. $21.95. 8Sep2007.

Church Road Cuve Series Sauvignon Blanc 2005 Tasted from a barrel sample, this is straw-yellow in colour with oak-influenced flavours over citrus with a spicy richness to the finish. A big, full-bodied style with the mellow oak giving a chardonnay-like fullness, but the pungency of the sauvignon blanc fruit lingers strongly. 13.5% alc. $30. 19Oct2005.

Churton Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2005 (c) A hint of that unique Marlborough sweat on the nose, and all the typical Marlborough greens in the palate, with gooseberry, herbs, asparagus, bean and limes with a tropical flourish to the aftertaste, this is THE wine to match to new season's asparagus and salads. 14% alc. 12Sep2006.

Clayridge Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2005 (sc) A deeper coloured wine than many other 2005's at the same age, this is soft and full in the palate with a grainy texture, red apples, citrus peel and tropical fruit. A ripe style with only a hint of herbaceousness and a lingering, smoky finish. 13.2% alc. $18. 3Dec2005.

Clayridge Excalibur Marlborough Sauvignon 2005 (sc) Golden in colour, it looks more like chardonnay than sauvignon blanc and with its ripe apricot, melon and citrus fruit and smooth creamy texture, it tastes a little like chardonnay too. It's a toasty wine with crisp, zesty citrus and a touch of caramel on the finish. Mouthfilling and long. A delicious oak aged style. Brilliant match to whole, roasted spring onion and fennel bulbs. 14.5% alc. $29.95. 17Oct2006.

Clearview Reserve Hawkes Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2005 (sc) It's light yellow gold with green glints. On the nose it shows a slightly developed mellow character with funky yeasts, vanilla and stonefruit. It's rich and complex in the palate with underlying melon and stonefruit. Well-balanced, tasty, buttery and long, this barrel-fermented wine is caressingly aged in oak for 11 months with weekly lees stirring. There's 9% Semillon in there as well. 13.5% alc. $22.00. 24Mar2007.

Clearview Te Awanga Hawkes Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2005 (sc) Pale coloured, herbal smelling with a touch of tart apple and subtle oak dog which leads into tart gooseberry and ripe melon flavours with a slightly spritzy texture and a citrussy finish. A reasonably full-boded style with a crisp, dry, bracing finish. 13% alc. $16. 3Dec2005.

Cloudy Bay Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2005 (sc) Quite muted pear-like aromas and warm-textured spicy flavours with fleshy pear, citrus, gooseberry and tropical fruit and a slightly, sweaty herbaceous pungency to the juicy finish. After a restrained start, it finishes quite powerfully - this is a wine that always shows better six months after release. 13.5% alc. $28.95. 12Oct2005.

Cloudy Bay Te Koko Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2005 (sc) A light gold coloured wine with powerful aromas of tropical guava and feijoa , a wild yeast funkiness and a touch of caramel oak complexity. Bright and tangy to the taste with exotic fruits, baked apple, an oiliness to the texture, a soft acid backbone and a long, powerful finish, this is an intriguing wine and so different. Perhaps the best yet. 13.5% alc. $43.99. 20Feb2008.

Coopers Creek Vineyard Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2005 (sc) Straw gold, toasty, pungent and almost sweaty with rich flavours of grass, gooseberries and tropical fruit with an oily texture and a fumť (cut grass) finish. 13% alc. $17. 9Nov2005.

Corbans Homestead Hawkes Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2005 (sc) Light gold. Developing peasy notes on the nose with metallic, damp hay aromas. Peasy notes underlie the riesling-like citrussy flavours, but it's SB through and through on the finish with is ripe, powerful, long and zesty. 13% alc. $13.95. 24Mar2007.

Corbans Private Bin Hawkes Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2005 (sc) Straw gold. A rounded, mouthfilling style with oak adding complexity without overpowering the fruit. 13% alc. $19.95. 20Oct2005.

Cottage Block Hawkes Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2005 Sweetish smelling with hints of tropical fruit, it's well-balanced in the palate with hints of oak, melon and stonefruit and a citrussy backbone with a sweet herbaceous influence and soft oak on the finish. Medium to full bodied. Not too aggressive. 13.5% alc. $27.95. 27May2006.

Crossroads Destination Series Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2005 (sc) Freshly squeezed lemon aromas and lemon-dominant flavours in this full-bodied wine that lets the classic Marlborough flavours of gooseberry and herbs emerge then give way to bright zesty, tropical fruit.. Dry and lively with lime, cut grass and tobacco lingering on the long, vibrant finish. 13% alc. $18.95. 3Dec2005.

Dashwood Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2005 (sc) Very pale coloured. Grassy, gooseberry and melon aromas lead into a smooth, oily textured wine with gooseberry and quite vibrant tropical fruit with a juiciness to the exuberant passionfruit and citrus flavours that linger on the finish. A very appealing wine both in packaging and taste. 13.5% alc. $15.95. 31Oct2005.

Dog Point Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2005 (sc) Palest straw coloured, sweet pea and herb aromas and tropical fruit flavours with a good dollop of kiwifruit and lime, a hint of capsicum and a lingering, sweet pea finish. Fresh, ripe, juicy and long. 13.0% alc. $23.95. 30Nov2005.

Domaine Georges Michel Sauvignon Blanc 2005 (D) A bit like lemon sherbet at first, it develops gooseberry and baked apple flavours over a slightly honeyed backbone with the complexity of old oak adding to the weight. Oily textured with crisp acidity, and while not the classical style, itís a very good food wine. Try it with a stir fry of onion, leek, fennel and tomato to accompany chicken. 14% alc. $22. 31Jul2006.

Dry River Martinborough Sauvignon Blanc 2005 Capsicum on nose, quite astringent lemon and grainy green apples in palate, becoming quite rich with an oily texture. The finish redeems this wine - it's very long lasting with a toasty citrus flavour. 12% alc. $25. 27May2006.
