Allan Scott Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2006 (sc) Full of armpit, lime and gooseberry aromas, it's classically the new sweaty Marlborough style. Crisp, fresh, pungent and tasty, fairly dry with gooseberry, apple and tropical fruit on the finish. Juicy and moreish. $17.50. 18Sep2006.
Anchorage Nelson Sauvignon Blanc 2006 (sc) A concentrated riper style, it smells of summer herb infused citrus with a hint of green bean and sweet pea and it tastes rich, bright and zesty. The herb and citrus on the nose comes through in abundance in the palate, there's a honeyed apple richness but it is not a sweet wine by any means, quite dry in fact. It's bright, refreshing, vivacious and tasty with an every so slightly grainy texture and a grassy herbaceousness and orange peel on the rich, long finish, with just a hint of pineapple as it lingers. 13.5% alc. 6g/l rs. $17. 13Feb2007.
Anchorage Reserve Nelson Sauvignon Blanc 2006 (sc) Hints of capsicum on the nose merge with citrus in the palate. Sauvignon's expected richness fills out the palate and grilled stonefruits linger on the finish. It's full-bodied with a soft, almost oily texture with fruit sweetness strumming along on the pungent aftertaste. Lightly oaked with aging on yeast lees. 13.5% alc. $18.00. 24Mar2007.
Astrolabe Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2006 (sc) Very pale lemon with an appealing, full-on, ripe fruit aroma full of passionfruit and distinctive sauvignon fruit and a crisp, grassy flavour joined by juicy citrus, passionfruit and green bean with a slight graininess to the oily texture, a pungent lingering finish and just a touch of spicy heat. If this is what 2006 is offering - WOW! 13% alc. $19.99. 9Aug2006.
Ata Rangi Martinborough Sauvignon Blanc 2006 (sc) Apples, melon and stonefruit, grainy textured, low cropped hand picked fruit, a minerally undercurrent and very dry. None of the Marlborough pungency but a barrel component adds flesh and structure to the juicy stonefruit and yellow guava fruit flavours that build in power to culminate in a very long finish. 13.5% alc. $25. 18Sep2006.
Babich Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2006 (sc) This is a soft, oily wine with a character that reminds me of bubblegum along with tropical fruit and citrus with a touch of herb on the finish. $19.95. 28Jul2006.
Bach 22 East Coast Sauvignon Blanc 2006 (sc) Capsicum aromas and flavours. It's a little dull to start with but soon redeems itself with capsicum and juicy sweet citrus with a delicate citrus pungency. 12.5% alc. $11.95. 24Mar2007.
Bensen Block Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2006 Steely on the nose with a lime peel aroma and crisp, limey flavours in the palate. It's fresh and well-balanced with a slightly chalky texture and then explodes with juicy savvy fruit that is full of flavour, with a touch of apple and capsicum on the finish. A scintillating more citrussy style that will suit white fish. 13.5% alc. $16.95.11Sep2006.
Black Barn Vineyard Barrel Fermented Hawkes Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2006 (D) Very strong, leesy, pineapple and banana aromas with 'funky' and slightly stinky wild yeasts leaping out of the glass. Abundant tropical fruit salad in the texturally rich palate with a spicy, savoury undercurrent and a long, juicy aftertaste with excellent length. Fermented in French oak, 10% new, with 70% wild yeasts. $31. 9Oct2007.
Boreham Wood Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2006 (sc) Stonefruit, melon, tropical fruit and cherimoya aromas and full-bodied, bright fruited flavours with a tingling of juicy grapefruit, an underpinning of herbs, a delicate muskiness and a softness to the fleshy finish - which lingers deliciously. It sets itself apart because it's quite stylistically different to the Wairau Valley savvies, and all the better for it. 13% alc. $19.50. 16Oct2007.
Bouldevines Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2006 (sc) Crisp & tight, dry and citrussy, vibrant and refreshing with grass and herb flavours. It seems like it might have a nuance of oak adding richness to the texture, but it doesn't. 13% alc. $21. 8Oct2006.
Cable Bay Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2006 (sc) Dry, minerally, gooseberry, grapefruit, a touch of sweat. Lean style and very dry - but wait - it opens up deliciously with lots of greens on the juicy finish. 3% oak. 13% alc. $20. 18Sep2006.
Carrick Central Otago Sauvignon Blanc 2006 (sc) There's a perfumed, slightly musky note, a grassy herbaceous and crisp green fruit backbone and a flinty undercurrent but like all the good SB's it explodes on the finish with ripe, juicy, tropical fruit that lingers for ages. 13% alc. $19.50. 18Sep2006.
Church Road Hawkes Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2006 (sc) Straw gold. Lemony aromas with hints of capsicum and some sulphides in there too. Fresh, tasty, spicy, bright and zesty in a lighter-bodied style, it's quite flinty and dry green apple fruit and a hint of cut grass 'smokiness' on the lingering fresh, tasty finish. 14% alc. $24.95. 24Mar2007.
Churton Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2006 (c) Light gold with richness to the colour, it's delicately smoky and mealy on the nose and crisp, fresh and grassy to the taste with underlying flavours of apples and citrus and herbal notes coming through on the long, leesy, full-bodied finish. A wine with power and flow with a touch of nectarine coming through as it lingers. A small portion of the wine was barrel fermented and this portion remained on its yeast lees for 4 months. 13.5% alc. 9Oct2007.
Clayridge Excalibur Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2006 (sc) Creamy, barrel-ferment oak scents - delicious and inviting. The toasty barrel ferment flavours merge in harmony with melon and tropical fruit. Full-bodied, rich, ripe and tasty, the fruit makes a vibrant statement on the rounded and lightly spicy, spritzy, sweet-edged finish. Long and lasting with wild yeast flavours coming through with time in the glass. A wine of harmony, balance and richness - a stunning example of oak-fermented Sauvignon Blanc. 14.5% alc. $26. 24Nov2007.
Clayridge Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2006 (sc) Rampant sweat on the nose later becomes quite grassy and herbal. Green apples in the palate, dry, almost grainy texture, gooseberry, apples, lime with a toffeish character coming though on the sweetish finish. Lots of pungent herbaceous notes and a sweaty aftertaste. It becomes richer and richer, and needs more time as some nice flavour notes appear as it opens up. There's a hint of oak and wild yeasts coming into play as well. Rich and powerful with a long juicy finish. 12.5% alc. $18.95. 17Oct2006.
Clearview Hawkes Bay Te Awanga Sauvignon Blanc 2006 (sc) Lovely delicate 'green' characters on nose - herbs, grapefruit - it smells like sauvignon should, but it is not so appealing in the palate with a Vitamin B character sticking out at first. Get past that and you will find a zesty wine with a citrussy backbone, quite rich, powerful and spicy with hints of gooseberry and a sweet, pungent finish. 90% tank fermented. 9% Semillon blended from barrel ferment. 13.5% alc. $20.00. 24Mar2007.
Clearview Hawkes Bay Reserve Sauvignon Blanc 2006 (sc)
Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Marlborough Blanc 2006 (sc) Very tight to start with, especially when served so cold as to subdue the delicate aromas, so employ lots of wrist action to bring out the richness and flavour and the power of the wine will explode on the aftertaste. 13.5% alc. $33. 10Oct2006.
Coopers Creek Early Release Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2006 (sc) A fresh fruity wine with a lime and passionfruit aroma and a soft, sweet fruit flavour that seems quite gentle for the first two seconds then hits you with its bracing freshness. It is powerfully pungent with lemon grass herb and tropical fruit and some residual sugar to appeal to the masses. 13% alc. $16.99. 5May2006.
Corbans Homestead Hawkes Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2006 (sc) Zesty aromas full of gooseberry fruit with gooseberry and melon in the palate and a kind of earthy, pithy backbone that leads into a citrussy finish with grassy herbs pushing through the earth. Chilling dulls the wine, making it taste bland and sweaty. 12.5% alc. $15.95. 17Oct2006.
Craggy Range Te Muna Road Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2006 - Martinborough (sc) A soft mellow sauvignon blanc with partial barrel fermentation and wild yeast imparting distinctive aromas while adding weight and richness to the palate. There's a crisp herbaceousness, an earthy undercurrent, a long dry citrussy finish and a sweet stonefruit note to the lingering aftertaste. "Sauvignon Blanc for grownups". 14% barrel ferment. 12% indigenous yeasts. 4 months on lees. 13.5% alc. 3g/l rs. $24.95. 31Oct2006.
Croft Martinborough Sauvignon Blanc 2006 (sc) There's a touch of that sweaty armpit character on the nose, which is unusual for Martinborough but might just be setting the trend off there. It's tight and just a little grainy in the weighty, textural palate which is full of apple, lime & gooseberry fruit while the finish is dry and tasty with just a touch of grapefruit lingering. Crossroads Destination Series Sauvignon Blanc 2006 (sc) A pungent wine with just a little of that sweaty character, it's crisp and dry with gooseberry and a touch of tomato stalk with tropical fruit and apple or the finish. I can just imagine this with tomato based salads. 10% Awatere fruit. 13% alc. $19. 18Sep2006.
Dashwood Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2006 Sweaty, musky, apocrine aromas and tight, musky, tropical fruit, gooseberry and lime flavours that build up to a rich, juicy finish. The sweaty character is always there, but does not overpower while the texture is chalky but garnering an oiliness. Lots of Marlborough greens on the tasty finish. 13.5% alc. $15.90. 11Sep2006.
Dog Point Marlborough Section 94 Sauvignon Blanc 2006 (c) Light yellow gold, smoky and just a little earthy with a very subtle steely character and funky wild yeast scents. It's impressively ripe and fruit-sweet in the palate yet earthy, nutty and savoury with sizzling intense fruit reminiscent of tropical guava and kiwi berry and always sauvignonís distinct pungency. It finishes dry, funky and steely with the satisfying glow of after love. An incredible wine, it's so different, so way out there and on the edge.13.5% alc. $36. 16Mar2008.
Dry River Martinborough Sauvignon Blanc 2006 A little restrained on the nose but exuberantly pungent and distinctly sauvignon blanc in its flavour. There's an initial spicy, tingly, grapefruit zest spritziness that gives way to a silky texture with a fine, steely undercurrent and fruit that encompasses the apple, lime and passionfruit spectrum before melon and stonefruit flesh out the finish while underlying gooseberry keeps it focused. Bone dry, crisp and refreshing. 13% alc. Release price $31. 16Sep2006.
Eradus Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2006 (sc) A full-throttle sweaty armpit style, rich and fruity with the citrus on the nose coming through to excite the palate together with cut grass, tropical fruit and a stonefruit richness to the citrussy finish. Awatere fruit. Made at Marlborough Vintners. $19.95. 10Oct2006.
Five Flax East Coast Sauvignon Blanc 2006 (sc) Tasted at room temperature it lacks vibrancy on the nose and in the palate it's oily textured with citrus and grapefruit although a little sweet and toffee-ish with banana-infused tropical fruit and melon on the finish. Chilling pronounces the acidity and tones down the sweetness resulting in a bright, fruity, zesty, punchy drink. Must be served chilled. 13% alc. $13.95. 17Oct2006.
Forrest Estate Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2006 Rich, ripe, fruit sweet, well-balanced and tasty with mid-palate richness adding complexity and more than a touch of grapefruit adding zesty brightness. It's dry in style with fruit sweetness and a salad of tropical fruit pouncing on the finish for a long juicy aftertaste. Very drinkable. 13.5% alc. $18.95. 11Sep2006.
Forrest Estate James Randall Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2006 (sc) A perfect balance of fruit sweetness and acidity with a lime-like citrus bitterness complementing the overall fleshy juiciness. There's an exotic character to the flavours, like feijoa, which blends into more typical, gooseberry, melon and apple. The texture is rich and creamy but there's a crisp, earthy, slightly flinty undercurrent. The pungency of the sauvignon fruit takes over and there's an intriguing aniseed character as it lingers then on the aftertaste, Christmas plums from the old family home (an early cropping Japanese variety with cherry red skin and yellow flesh). A concentrated powerhouse of a wine with a finish that goes on and on. Outstanding. 14% alc. $39. 4May2007.
Foxes Island Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2006 (sc) Ripe, bright fruity and lively, sweet fruit, tart racy acidity, resplendent in its portrayal of Marlborough greens, even bordering on vegetal, which in this context is quite okay. The capsicum, bean and sweet pea flavours are tinged with bright citrus acidity with lemon, lime and even tangelo addling to mix. Texture is slightly grainy, there are myriads of grassy herbs and the finish is long, tasty, full and pungent. And to top that off, there's a complex mouthfilling richness, probably because the wine was worked on its yeast lees for 6 months. 13.5% alc. $28.95. 4May2007.
Framingham Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2006 (sc) Light gold, clear, bright. Grassy and herbaceous with gooseberry and citrus on the nose. Crisp, grassy and citrussy in the juicy palate, rich, almost oily and brightly pungent with gooseberry, hints of grapefruit, a zesty spiciness, a flourish of herbs and a touch of pear and tropical fruit on the lingering aftertaste. 13% alc. $19.95. 4May2007.
Francis-Cole Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2006 (sc) Tasted just 3 days after bottling, it's closed on the nose but the richness and fleshiness of the sauvignon fruit is all there in the palate and the burst of flavours kick in with abundance 30 seconds after the wine is swallowed. 10Oct2006.
Freefall Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2006 (sc) Deliciously juicy and full of flavour with gooseberry on nose and fresh, vibrant flavours of kiwifruit and feijoa amidst the myriad of exotic tropical fruits with a firm underpinning of grapefruit-like citrus. Wairau Valley fruit. 13.5% alc. $17.95. 8Oct2006.
Gladstone Wairarapa Sauvignon Blanc 2006 (sc) Served at room temperature, citrus in the palate combines with extracted green flavours and there are sweaty notes too, but they are gym locker rather than freshly washed. Capsicum and gooseberry fill out the finish with a hint of tropical fruit trying to push its way through. When chilled the wine is crisp with a rich oily palate, a slippery texture and a powerful zesty finish. 13.5% alc. $22. 17Oct2006.
Gladstone 12,000 Miles Wairarapa Sauvignon Blanc 2006 (sc) A pungent, capsicum and slightly sweaty (B.O. aroma) with apples to the fore in the palate - toasted apples, spice and zesty citrus with a rich Sauvignon backbone and a long, ripe, sweet-fruited pungent finish. A wine with lots of flavour and a bit of that sweet and sour thing going on as well. 13.5% alc. $16.95. 24Mar2007.
Goldwater Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2006 (sc) A weighty, full-bodied sauvignon blanc, quite pungent with a touch of sweat, capsicum and tomato stalk with a stonefruit and melon emerging on the finish - a contrast of pungent sweaty fruit and richness balanced by refreshing citrus and baked green apple acidity. 13.5% alc. $20. 24May2007.
Grove Mill Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2006 Tropical fruit and apple aromas and crisp, steely flavours with lots of grassy, green, lime characters and a slightly grainy texture. Tastes dry, crisp and refreshing at this stage of its life and will flesh up over the summer. 13.5% alc. $19.95. 11Sep2006.
Hunter's Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2006 (sc) Apple and gooseberry aromas, not overly pungent, and an oily, apple, citrus and gooseberry fruit flavour with a crisp freshness and an underpinning of summery herbs. It is reasonably full-bodied but there's a dull sweaty character that emerges and a prickly tartness to the drying finish. 13.5% alc. $19.90. 16/20. 5Jan2007.
Isabel Estate Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2006 (sc) A subdued, soft, funky, warm, rich style with a mealy, caramel influence, a departure from the typically high acid, tropical fruit, punchy, green-edged Marlborough savvies. There's a component of older oak and wild yeasts adding richness to the melon and stonefruit flavours and there's a wee burst of apple acidity on the slightly grainy finish. 13% alc. $23. 6Jul2007.
Jackson Estate Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2006 (sc) Subtle yet powerful with wonderful fruit weight and richness to texture with a light 'fruit nectar-like' viscosity that adds to the pleasing mouthfeel. It's abundantly fruity with a hint of orange peel on the nose and a touch of ripe stonefruit amongst the summer herb, capsicum and tomato and citrus flavours, yet there's a softness and creaminess there that makes this wine so appealing - I reckon even Chardonnay drinkers would enjoy this savvy. 13% alc. $22.50. 24Nov2007.
Jackson Estate Grey Ghost Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2006 (sc) A new wave 'alternative' style with wild yeast ferment and 80% barrel work resulting in a rich, ripe, powerful, flavoursome wine. A little savoury on the nose with hints of soft oak and grilled peaches, and a soft, rounded, mellow palate with peach, passionfruit, melon, summer herbs, a touch of honey, a spicy savouriness to the creamy backbone and a mouthfilling and pungently long finish where tropical guava flavours emerge. Julicher Martinborough Sauvignon Blanc 2006 (sc) There's that kind of Martinborough regional signature of green apple on the nose, and in the palate it's very crisp and very dry with gooseberry, lime, capsicum and bean. It seems like it needs to fatten up a little at this stage but the zesty characters on finish open up to a long, pungent, and delicious aftertaste. 13.5% $19.50. 8Oct2006.
Jules Taylor Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2006 (sc) Pale straw with a pungent scent and ripe, tangy and juicy flavours with melon, stonefruit, limes, grapefruit, passionfruit and gooseberries fighting for supremacy. Crunchy, classy and totally delicious, a blend of Wairau Valley and Awatere Valley fruit. 13% alc. $18.99. 21Mar2007.
Kakapo Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2006 (sc) Apples on nose and apples in palate with a crisp citrussy backbone, herbs, gooseberry and a juicy finish. Shy to start but opens up well. Awatere Valley. 13% alc. $18.95. 8Oct2006.
Kaituna Valley Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2006 (sc) Made from Awatere fruit, it doesn't leap out of the glass like some others but boy, it packs a punch in the palate. Crisp, fresh and fruity with well-defined acidity, lots of pungent grassy flavours and a flourish of apple, lime, melon, kiwi and tropical fruit make this a quenching, mouth awakening starter to the evening. 13% alc. $15.99. 13Dec2006.
Karikari Estate Silver Bay Nelson Sauvignon Blanc 2006 (sc) Quite delicate - call that 'shy' - on the nose with tropical fruit and boiled lemon lolly aromas, it's dry and steely to the taste with a salty minerality to the pineapple and gooseberry fruit while crisp apple flavours and sage-like herbs linger on the aftertaste. Nota classically pungent style but would wow some of the seafood that is so abundant in the Far North. 12.5% alc. $19.00. 26Aug2007.
Kim Crawford SP Spit Fire Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2006 (sc) (sc) Rich, vibrant, sweaty aroma and a fabulous, fat, mouthfilling flavour full of tropical fruit and stone fruit with a hint of honey adding richness and crisp underlying herbs. Beautifully vibrant and tasty. NZIWS Gold Medal Tasting. 20Sep2006.

Latitude 41 Marlborough/Nelson Sauvignon Blanc 2006 (Z) Quite grassy, peasy, capsicum aromas, citrussy and spicy to the taste with a firm underpinning of gooseberry and capsicum with citrus and herbs on the full-bodied finish. Fresh and clean with good acidity. 12.5% alc. $19.99. 17Mar2007.
Lawson Dry Hills Limited Release Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2006 (sc) Really strong grapefruit aromas, like freshly squeezed grapefruit juice or grapefruit frosted with sugar and put in the fridge overnight. The grapefruit carries through to the palate with vivacious lemon grass and other herbs amongst bright, pineapple-dominant tropical fruit, with a grassy backbone. Fantastic with a bitter green salad. 5% barrel ferment. 3g/l rs. 14.5% alc, $20. 13Aug2006.
Lawson's Dry Hills Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2006 Ripe grapefruit on the nose and juicy, grapefruit in the palate with underlying tropical sweetness and a crisp, green, grassy backbone with the zingy grapefruit the dominating character throughout. Vibrant and tasty. Imagine this for breakfast! Yum! 13% alc. $20.95. 11Sep2006.
Lincoln Heritage Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2006 'Lukrica' (sc) Pale lemon in colour. Citrus and lime sherbet on the nose with a gooseberry richness taking over, it's bright and citrussy to the taste with a slightly oily texture and a pungent herbaceous backbone with a touch of sweetness on the tangy finish. A wine that has fruit from both the Awatere and Wairau Valleys, it's very tasty as an accompaniment to a smoked salmon, horseradish and cream cheese spread. 13% alc. $18. 11Aug2006.
Lindemans New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc 2006 (sc) Bubblegum on the nose and oily in the palate with green bean and green apple flavours. Crisp, fresh and herbal, as sauvignon blanc should be, but also a little earthy and dull. 12.5% alc. $14.95. 31Jul2006.
Lonestone Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2006 (sc) Not as exuberant as some of the others on the nose this is grassy and nettley with grapefruit and passionfruit and a dry, taut but juicy finish. NZIWS Gold Medal Tasting. 20Sep2006.
Longridge Hawkes Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2006 (sc) Pale yellow. Zesty, vibrant style, gooseberry and citrus, underpinning of herbs, soft and simple like a sweet, juicy riesling with sauvignon blanc's pungent oomph fleshing out the finish. When chilled it still tastes sweetish but tastes more like a Marlborough style. 12% alc. $15.95. 17Oct2006.
Mahi Byrne Vineyard Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2006 (sc) A lean style with a soft texture from partial oak treatment that imparts underlying richness and power to the citrus zest, pear and apple fruit characters. Wairau Valley fruit fermented in both tank and oak with a portion of wild ferment. 13% alc. $21. 12May2007.
Mahi Francis Vineyard Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2006 (sc) Aromas of gooseberry and capsicum lead into a soft palate with oak toning down the vivacious grassy, gooseberry flavours. It's smooth, rich and rounded with baked apple and a smidgen of honey on the toasty finish and some of that funky wild yeast character rippling into the mix every now and then. A complex style of savvie made from Wairau Valley fruit with fermentation in both tank and French barriques. 13.5% alc. $21. 12May2007.
Mahi Ward Vineyard Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2006 (sc) Vibrantly aromatic, grassy and vivacious, crammed with mouthwatering flavours of citrus, lemongrass, gooseberry and exotic fruit like tropical guavas and feijoa with plenty of Marlborough greens (capsicum and green pea) adding to the full-on attack of flavours. There's a mealy richness, a slightly grainy texture and a toastiness to the finish. Deliciously exciting and deliciously moreish, Ward is a new vineyard area, clse to the coast, about 40 k's south of Blenheim. 14% alc. $21. 12May2007.

Manaia Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2006 (sc) Straw lemon gold in colour with a fresh citrussy aroma imbued with lemon grass and other aromatic herbs. It's a crisp, dry, steely style, lovely and refreshing with the sauvignon flavours growing in richness for a long, flavoursome finish. Not overly pungent but well balanced and totally perfect for the occasion, which was a summery platter lunch. Matua Valley Innovator Northbank Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2006 (sc) Pungent, grassy, herbaceous and floral on nose. Enigmatic in palate. Oily textured and hints of vegetal tones with guava, feijoa, grapefruit, lime and hints of musk. Quite powerful, pungent and excitingly different. There's richness and softness and spiciness which is perhaps a clue that there is wild yeast and perhaps some oak. Juicy and exotic with pears and apples on finish, tobacco adds heat to the aftertaste and grilled peaches take over at the end. There's a tight graininess to the wine, which is superbly structured and made to age and the mellow oak characters express themselves beautifully on the pungent, broad-flavoured finish. Okahu Estate Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2006 (sc) A slightly smoky, cheesy apple aroma and crisp apple flavours with a hint of lime, this wine is quite steely even a little metallic, and the medium weight finish is dry and lean. 15% of the wine was fermented in oak. Palliser Martinborough Sauvignon Blanc 2006 (sc) Light golden in colour, it looks richer and it tastes richer with its full-bodied flavours full of tasty cape gooseberries, tropcial fruit and citrus underpinned by the famous green flavours of sauvignon blanc. Possibly a hint of oak (notes will tell) and a long creamy finish with grapefruit and barrel ferment characters lingering on the finish. Pegasus Bay Waipara Valley Sauvignon Semillon 2006 (sc) A completely different style of sauvignon when tasted alongside an unoaked Marlborough wine, probably because it has oak-fermented Semillon in the blend. It's a rich lemon in colour with smoky pineapple and tropical fruit on the nose and a spicy savoury flavour with grapefruit acidity over stonefruit with sauvignon's pungency kicking in on the finish. There's a funkiness from the wild yeast fermentation and the finish is long and dry. The salmon spread is a yummy food and wine combo and accentuates the citrussy brightness of the wine. Pencarrow Martinborough Sauvignon Blanc 2006 (sc) Slightly musky notes on the nose, delicate sweat one could say, the freshly washed armpit kind. The fruit is sweet and juicy and full of tropical fruit, lemon and tangelo with hints of fennel - I can just imagine a fennel and tangelo salad as an accompaniment. There are hints of tomato stalk too and the finish is dry with a touch of tropical fruit on the lingering finish. Ra Nui Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2006 Like eating sauvignon blanc grapes straight off the vine, this is a softer, fruit sweet style and very grapey. Add to that some grassy herbaceousness and tart gooseberry fruit with an earthy undercurrent and a long, bright, zesty aftertaste with a hint of pineapple, and you have a very palatable and tasty wine. Richardson Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2006 (sc) Crisp, steely and just a little grassy on the nose -it smells very fresh, as young Sauvignon Blanc should be. In the palate it's toasty and pungent with crisp apple and gooseberry fruit with nuances of mellow oak adding softness while melon and stonefruit loiter in the background. Fifteen percent was fermented in older barrels with wild yeasts, but the funky, mealy characters are not apparent right now - if you like the characters that wild yeasts introduce, expect them to start evolving as the wines garners complexity over the next few months. 13% alc. $25. 15Aug2006.

Rockburn Central Otago Sauvignon Blanc 2006 (sc) Quite quincy on the nose with hints of asparagus adding a slightly vegetal character. It's weighty in the palate and the fresh sauvignon fruit is full of gooseberry and citrus. The richness of the wine comes through, the leesy notes are fat and almost honeyed and there is chardonnay-like weight to the finish and a tropical fruit aftertaste. Powerful, pungent exotic, perhaps a little oily and creeping over the vegetal side of the spectrum. It's bright and zesty with lime sherbet, gooseberry, herbs and capsicum and an amazingly, mouthfilling, pungent finish that you don't even have to wait for. It's there before you know it and it brings passionfruit and apricots and spicy zesty citrus with it and all those vegetal thoughts slip away. Wow, the explosion of flavours.
