Runner-up and best New Zealand Chardonnay was Villa Maria Reserve Barrique Fermented Gisborne Chardonnay 2007. Other gold medal winning New Zealand wines were Bennett & Deller Onyx Reserve Hawkes Bay Chardonnay 2007 Australia made up the balance with three remaining gold medals coming from Western Australia. They were 24 Karat Margaret River Chardonnay 2006 [Top] 8 Apr 2009: Bird Wines Joins Duckhorn Steve Bird of Bird Wines announces a joint venture with Duckhorn Wines in the USA. The new brand is Manu, the Maori name for bird. They are looking at reaching the lower price point of the market. Steve Bird says that Bird Wines is 98% export based but has recently entered into a negotiation with Cellar Select to bring their wines to retail customers in New Zealand. See this video on TVNZ [Top] 13 Jun 2008: Vintage figures are in and it's a biggie The New Zealand Wine Industry has crushed a whopping 285,000 tonnes of grapes this year, up 39% on last year and almost 4 times the production of 10 years ago. Marlborough alone crushed 195,000 tonnes of grapes, which is more than the total crush across the whole country in 2006. The big jump in production, which is 40,000 tonnes more than predicted, is due primarily to increased production of Sauvignon Blanc in Marlborough to satisfy export demand.
